When he wasn’t working in the shipping department of Syd Silver’s Formals on Yonge Street, Ramnanan could be found tinkering with his Thunderbird outside his apartment near Eglinton Avenue and Avenue Road. An immigrant from Trinidad, the quiet Ramnanan kept to himself and worked to help support his widowed mother.

After wrapping up another shift at the tuxedo shop on a warm August night, Ramnanan drove to his sister’s apartment in east-end Toronto. He only stayed for 15 minutes because he said he had to meet with someone. His brother-in-law said his final goodbye after riding down with Ramnanan on the elevator. But he didn’t go outside. Later, he would tell the Toronto Sun that if he had, he may have been able to see whether Ramnanan had a passenger in his beloved Thunderbird or whether someone had driven him to the apartment.

Ramnanan made it back to his apartment on 939 Avenue Rd. where neighbours said he had been living for at least three years.

The next day, Bob Thompson, the superintendent of the three-storey building, began his morning by dealing with a complaint from one of Ramnanan’s neighbours. It was 10 a.m. on Aug. 27, 1982 and loud music was already bumping from the 36-year-old’s stereo. When Thompson entered the apartment, he found Ramnanan’s body in the corner of his bedroom. He was nude, his arms were covered in blood and he was dead.

Before he was stabbed multiple times in the chest and stomach with a kitchen knife, Ramnanan was tied to a chair. Police believed he allowed his attacker to enter his apartment. His sister would later tell the Toronto Sun that people with “hard-luck stories” could easily convince Ramnanan to allow them to stay in his apartment overnight.

“He trusted people,” she said.


Similarities:
• Ramnanan, like most of McArthur’s alleged victims, was an immigrant.
• McArthur is alleged to have tied up men during sex and Ramnanan was found nude and tied to a chair in his own apartment.
• The killing took place in the time frame for cold cases potentially linked to the McArthur investigation."
