A 68-year-old man faces murder and weapons charges in the death of his girlfriend.

Authorities traced Joseph Gagnon to Westport, Conn., where he was pulled over in a rented car Thursday.

Gagnon was arrested the day after the body of Annick Smiton, 55, was found decomposing in his apartment.

Authorities believe she was shot in the head 15 to 20 days earlier.

From July 2007:

Rejecting last minute pleas for leniency, a Morris County judge today imposed what all agreed was a life sentence on a 69-year-old Mount Olive man who shot a woman to death in her apartment.

"I have deep remorse for my crime and I'll say I'm sorry," Joseph Gagnon said just before Superior Court Judge Salem Ahto ordered him to prison for 18 years...

Gagnon pleaded guilty in May to aggravated manslaughter for Oct. 27, 2005 death of Annick Smiton, 55, whose decomposing body was found a month later.
