NJ NJ - Brielle, WhtFem 18-30, UP2274, hit by train, blue rosary, clothes, scars, Jun'08

I'd like to throw out the possibility that this doe is Canadian. My friends and I (teens at the time) wore those bracelets but not out of religious affiliation, just as a fashion trend. I wish there was a brand available for the winter-themed sweater, as it reminds me of items sold at Northern Reflections - a store at the mall geared towards older ladies, but also had kids stuff sometimes, and is nowadays popular to thrift. They sold a lot of bird/nature/seasonal graphic pullovers.

Additionally, the New York tote bag gives off tourist vibes, and the black pants look like the flared Lululemon leggings that were super popular around the time too. The nail polish art makes me think she's on the younger side as well.

Maybe I missed it, but is there proof that she committed suicide vs. fell/was pushed onto the tracks?

I will do my best to look at Canadian MP's around this time.
Thanks for bumping!

I've been looking into this one for a long time. The rosary/jewelry, while inexpensive, has been difficult to pinpoint. It seems that multiple groups of people wore them at the time, be it for religious or fashion reasons. I've had some folks reach out as well saying that with the release of the Twilight films, the bracelets were sometimes worn because of that.

The combination of the rosary and the bracelet may point to more of a religious affiliation, but, of course, no reason to rule anything out at this juncture.

The reports I have examined from law enforcement haven't noted specific brands of clothing, as most labels were worn. I can check to be sure, but, offhand, I remember Playtex underwear, Adidas sneakers, and one of the shirts was from GAP. That was all as far as names went.

The sweater was one I tracked down to a brand called Morning Sun. They seemed to be sold in K-Mart and the like at that time, but it's entirely possible they were purchased secondhand as well.

Based on the autopsy and incident reports, there was no evidence suggesting how she ended up on the tracks, be it intentional or otherwise. The only thing that even suggests one way or the other was that the engineer stated he saw "white debris" on the tracks, which sounds like he was seeing the shirt she had tied around her waist, but, again, not definitive either way. I can go back and get the exact wording, but that was the basis of it.

The New York bag, area maps (never specified as to which areas), tan on the extremities, and the Islander newspaper scraps (points to a few miles to the south, Long Beach Island), makes me think she have been down the shore there for work. Again, that's just speculation.

This case is so prime for genetic genealogy. I pray it goes that way. NJ forensic anthropology is clearly interested — hers is among the longest exclusion list I’ve seen.

We were trying to work on this with NJ Transit police, but the response we had gotten was that DNA had been submitted, probably to CODIS, so it's a matter of family members or anyone else submitting DNA and it matching. Obviously, this isn't exactly the route we were hoping for, so we've been trying to stay in contact to open up the possibility of the DNA Doe Network or some of the other DNA initiatives to help clear some of these cases. I do think it may be somewhat jurisdictional, as multiple agencies responded to the scene.

I doubt this was a suicide. She had no pants on. It looks more like she was assaulted and left unconscious on the train tracks.

Very hard to say. The autopsy did not make any mention of the possibility, though, of course, the autopsy is going to focus on the observable facts, nor were there any notes of injuries that would suggest sexual assault. Of course, given the fact this was a train collision, it is not easy to determine if any injuries or bruising occurred prior to death. It is possible that, as she was near a body of water, that the pants had become damp and she had tied a shirt around her waist as a makeshift skirt, especially if the temperature were a bit chillier in the evening and the cold won't be kind with damp clothing.

Unfortunately, there are so many ways to speculate in this instance.

She is a little too young but since she resembled the reconstructions I have sent the match through Doe Network:

Ewa Wołyńska

Age in 2008: 16 years old
Date of disappearance: 2002/04/05
Age on the day of disappearance: 10 years old
Height: 138 cm
Eye Color: Blue
Distinguishing characters: pierced ears with earrings
Last place of stay: Karlino
Country: Poland

April 5, 2002 - Karlino, a small town located in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship. 10-year-old Ewa Wołyńska, a fourth-grade primary school student, returns home on Friday around 2 p.m. She is in a good mood and there is nothing disturbing in her behavior. A moment later, she goes out to the yard to play with his peers. After about two hours, the girl reports home. She really wants to go out again to continue having fun with her friends. The 10-year-old's mother, Mrs. Grażyna, does not agree to it at first, but after a while she allows her daughter to leave the house. During this time, she takes care of her younger daughter on her own. However, she looks at her daughter through the window to check what Ewa is doing. She notices her in the company of an unknown girl. She points out that the girls are very similar to each other. The stranger had short black hair and a distinctive jacket with red elements. And although she looks shorter than Ewa, it seems that the girls are the same age. The last time Mrs. Grażyna sees her daughter, she goes with a stranger towards the nearby forest.

When Ewa does not show up at home for bedtime an hour later, her confused and concerned parents notify the police. Additionally, with the help of neighbors, they comb the nearby area. The services are conducting large-scale search operations. They took part, among others: police tracking dogs, groups of divers, and army platoons. Every part of the nearby river was checked very carefully. Unfortunately, it did not bring any results and the girl "disappeared" into thin air. The father of the missing Ewa searched for his daughter in the country and abroad for many months on his own. The parents consulted detectives and clairvoyants. With no effect. The 10-year-old's image appeared on television programs, on websites and in newspapers.

The hypothesis that the girl had drowned was quickly ruled out because the area around the river and the river itself were carefully checked. It was speculated that Adrian M. may be related to Ewa's disappearance. M., who was behind the kidnapping of Maja from Wołczkowo in 2015. However, no evidence was found that could confirm this thesis.

During the investigation, it turned out that on that day and a few days earlier, a suspicious car with foreign registration numbers was driving around the area. Many of the neighbors believed that Ewa could have been abducted and taken outside the country or fell victim to a pedophile network. However, these assumptions could not be confirmed either.

Grażyna and Józef Wołyński are still waiting for the case to be solved, believing that new information will emerge that will bring them closer to finding out the truth. Due to the above, Ewa Wołyńska is still considered a missing person.

Marylin Bergenon? Apart from the tattoo (which could have been removed), I think it's a great coincidence.

Might be a bit young, but you never know--estimates have been off before. Glad you submitted a potential match.

Trafficking is possible, and, reading up on Ewa's case, one of the leading theories is that she had been taken to Germany. Very sad story.

In looking into this case and working with two other people who have successfully found the identity of an unidentified body that required cross-border information sharing, it is still incomprehensible to me so that so little is shared between countries in terms of missing and unidentified persons. There is no real universal missing persons system unless a country requests an addition to Interpol, and I can only imagine how many cases could be solved if this cooperation was in place.

For example, there is the unidentified man who drowned near Silgo in Ireland. He doesn't meet the criteria for a red notice nor a yellow notice from Interpol since he has not committed any crime and is deceased (so he's not "at-risk"), and, since his identity is unknown, a country cannot put in a search notice for him.

The main thing to me is the height difference. Brielle Jane Doe is listed as 5'4." Marilyn is listed as 5'7." That would be a fairly significant difference in height.

Marilyn's tattoo would exclude her (though it could have been removed). The fact that she left with no identification may have had made it difficult for her to cross the border to the US. I don't know if the 2009 sighting of Marilyn between Montreal and Ottawa has been deemed credible by police, but her parents certainly think it was her that asked for help that night in 2009.

Certainly not impossible, and I'm surely no authority, but I think unlikely.

I don't believe Russian Orthodox use the same type of rosary as Catholics, so I would question Marina having one.

MOO

If she really is this Jane Doe, then I think she would have taken these rosary beads from somewhere.
Hi, I am Byzantine, Eastern Rite Ukrainian Catholic and I can tell you, The Eastern Rite of the Church such as that in Russia and the Orthodox, Do not Pray the Rosary. That is traditionally a custom of the Western Roman Rite Church. The bracelet she is wearing was incredibly common at my Franciscan Catholic college in Ohio, worn by all the girls along with other rosary bracelets and such. They are Roman Rite items sold in every Catholic church rectory and given out at Catholic youth conferences. Icons from the Eastern Rite have big gold halos and extremely symmetrical blocky features to appear godlike. The images on the bracelet are small scale Roman Rite paintings that are more modern than the ancient icons of the East. I hope this was helpful! I just wanted to say that the jewelry does not in any way point to her of being specifically from Russia or that area of the world. In fact I have owned both of those items at some point in my life, as an Ohio white girl who grew up in the suburbs. Plastic rosaries of that quality, the rope and plastic beads glued on, are often bought in bulk as you can imagine, for cheap. For this reason I have most often seen this specific blue rosary in the mail from various Catholic charities asking for donations and prayers. You may also see it being given out at a Catholic shelter or soup kitchen. They are literally the cheapest Rosary available. A strong, practicing Catholic usually has a Rosary with better beads- but I'm not judging! Next, wearing the Rosary. That is a HUGE silly controversy in the Catholic Church among laity with nothing better to do. Practicing Catholics often argue against wearing the Rosary- and instead wear medals, especially the Miraculous Medcal if they are particularly devoted to Mary; however, I have noticed Hispanic countries wear Rosaries traditionally and meaningfully, but if say a Caucasian young girl is wearing one around her neck, she is either uneducated about her faith but interested or trusting, wearing it for fashion (I doubt that because she also had the saint bracelet), or she is wearing it for special protection that day, and it's the only thing she had (cheapest Rosary of all time) to give her comfort in her last moment OR if she was running away from a dangerous, trafficking situation or domestic abuse and clung to this. I looked and St. Dennis Catholic church was 3 mins around the corner from the Fisk street crossing where she was hit. St. Dennis has the "St. Vincent De Paul Food Pantry" out of the lower level of their church, where they could be handing out cheap Catholic items with meals. I have no further conclusive thoughts on that. Thank you for reading my long post... If she was homeless, why were her nails painted recently? (there is no gap from the paint to the skin like outgrow nails). Why was she carrying a tooth brush and a change of clothes? People thinking of taking their lives don't fear being cold or if their teeth rot. Maybe, despite the jewelry, she made a last second decision to jump in front of the train without much forethought, originally on her way to a different location. Lastly, I fear this was a crime considering this was probably a young woman. And as my boyfriend put it, women don't take their lives, statistically, as much as men. As much as they see homicide as a last resort in this case, the police said the black pants were in her bag... not on her. And it was 1:40am in the morning, and her fashion to me (other than the navy sweater) is young. As WalkingCircles said though, people know when young girls go missing. So I do think looking in other countries is a good idea, especially Canada or any states where you can travel to up and down the east coast by train and bus. The mention of Poland makes sense too, as they are a country more close to the Roman Rite practices than Russian. Her complexion looks like my mother, who is Irish and can't tan at all. The fact her belongings included an extra cap and scarf could have protected her light skin from the sun. I hope my ramblings offered further insight. Thank you!

Marina looks to be quite a bit taller at 5'6" - 5'8" and with a 36/37 shoe--that's equivalent to a US 5 or so?

Brielle Jane Doe was about 5'4" and wearing size 8 Adidas shoes.

This statement/report (if the translation is correct) mentions an inquiry into murder. Is it just suspected, or is there reason to believe Marina was killed? I'm not familiar with Russian police procedures, so I have no idea if this is considered typical.

Even searching in Russian, the report posted earlier and the one I added above are the only results I can find at the moment for Marina. I couldn't find anything on VK, either, though I only did a very basic search.

I have been in contact with people trying to get this case taken up by othram or dna doe project. That being said, I also think she could be a recent immigrant from Eastern Europe or Russia. I did find a missing person report for a young lady who went missing from Belarus shortly before jane doe was found that matches a lot of stats, but how would she have ended up in New Jersey?

I'm surprised just looking through the comments photos the body hasn't been as identified as Beata Rempisz yet. The facial reconstruction looks like her.

The sweater she or who whoever the Jane Doe was(lets just call her that for the rest of this paragraph) was carrying maybe they were working at one of the arcades/rides or at the counter or at a pizza place because it does get cold at night along the Jersey Shore Town boardwalks. Maybe whoever Jane Doe reported too(a manager) maybe Jane Doe just "silent quit" on their own because maybe other people had just stop showing up(i.e. silently quit)wherever Jane Doe had worked at one of the Jersey Shore towns boardwalks.

The bracelet another poster suggested on this thread maybe the Beata may have purchased it in Carteret, NJ. Beata was reported missing in Woodbridge, NJ in 2006 somebody else had posted on this thread. Carteret borders Woodbridge so its not that far fetched at all that the bracelet may have been purchased in Carteret. I know other posters on this thread have said the bracelet was sold in other countries too though.

I do live in New Jersey myself just to note.
Aye, my dad grew up in Carteret and the house behind him was in Woodbridge. It would actually be a sensible location for these cases because it's known as being mostly Polish and Irish (Dad's family was in the latter), and today also Sikhs.
