GUILTY NJ - Four dead in New Year's shooting, Long Branch, 31 Dec 2017 *Arrest*

gardenista you're not the only one that's suspicious. social media is very telling. not one person who "knows the family" or posted personal ties to them has ever met SK (the shooter). it's eerie.

and this:

http://www.app.com/story/news/crime/2018/01/05/long-branch-shooting-did-autism-violence/996102001/

In addition, in June, the boy’s mother, Linda Kologi, posted a comment on the Facebook page of the Hawkswood School, a private school in Eatontown that specializes in the education and treatment of children with autism and other disabilities.

“Hawkswood school and staff are amazing! So glad my son has such a wonderful, caring environment to learn and grow in,” read the post.

The school’s principal, Andrew Orefice, said he “could not confirm or deny a student’s attendance at the school,” citing a federal law that protects the privacy of special education students. The state-approved tuition for the school is about $75,000 per year, which is paid by the child's home school district.

Neighbors told the Asbury Park Press that Scott Kologi was home-schooled by his mother, but Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni said he was enrolled in a school, declining to name it.

OP had said the rifle belonged to a brother. That's why I was wondering if he lived there, as it stated the rifle belonged to someone in the home. I thought it was just the four who lived there and the daughter had come home for the holidays, and brother had maybe brought a friend (unnamed girl), and grandpa's gf seemed to live with them.

I found the tribute odd too. That school is just very pricey, maybe he, and his sister, was home for the holidays. From this article, it seemed like the core family, who lived there, was "targeted". Maybe he didn't want to go back?

Police have not speculated on a motive for the shooting. The rifle used in the shooting was legally registered to a resident of the house, Gramiccioni said.

The boy’s grandfather and brother were not targeted and left the home unharmed.

Idk, something doesn't seem right. If someone who had never touched one, found one, it wouldn't have a huge kick to it but they do kick a bit. If not prepared that can set you off balance, and, the noise, if not knowing what to expect, they'e loud. In that house, it would have be insanely loud. I thought I'd read that he (or maybe OP, had said it was their child) didn't like loud noises. I'd think that would startle him. It's not like spraying with a machine gun. He'd have to pull the trigger, each time, to fire. No headgear, it would be deafening, inside or out. If shooting outside, the noise is like a cannon going off, inside, I can't imagine, inside.

I’ve seen a bunch of quotes in news articles from neighbors and friends that knew the accused.

The school is no cost to the parents. Tuition is paid by the school district.

I didn’t get to see the tribute, but I have felt something was off from the start. Something isn’t sitting right with me. I can’t really say much more without violations TOS, but I am waiting for more evidence before I’m completely convinced that the accused is guilty.

Not sure. I read or saw a video that stated one of them has a tech business and his own home but I'm not sure now which one it was. I think it was the one with the same last name, though.

That is her son from a previous relationship. She worked there as an admin according to the article.

Questions I have, that we just probably aren't going to get answers to anytime soon:

Where was the gun?

Was it possibly being shown to him at the time?

Had the boy ever shot a gun before and was it loaded already?

Where were the survivors (and each of the victims) in relation to the shooter?

Did any of the survivors actually witness the shootings?

Did any of the survivors not see any of it?

Were the survivors all together or were they separate?

Yes all of these VM.

Were the survivors tested for gunpowder residue?

And the most obvious question- how did LE conclude that he was the shooter? Meaning what were the chain of events from the time LE was called to when they arrested SK?

BBM

Surely they did. Would that not be part of the processing of the scene? To test all survivors?

I live near this area, and also have a child on the spectrum....IRL she can't handle the sound of gunfire(went to a parade with fake patriotic mullets that went off....never went to that parade again!! It was loud). I remember A Lanza I believe had headphones on, very surprised this shooter could have utilized this weapon several times over in his household, of course we don't know if he had ear protection on, very well could have, there has to be more mental illness going on or something? Ironically I have been through bankruptcy and 2 foreclosures due to medical and income reasons so I so sympathize so much for the parents, its so close to home. Makes me wish I could have known that mom:( Its so hard. What a tragedy.

@bears10, i have only read one quote from a neighbor that knew him. it's more comments like these that are predominant, IMO. it's as if the shooter is "unmentionable". whether that be because of his "disability" or simply because it's too painful to mention his name, i don't know...

http://www.app.com/story/news/crime...ng-kologis-were-best-people-world/1007551001/

Linda Kologi also is survived by another son from a prior relationship, Jonathan Ruiz, who was not in the house at the time of the shooting.

Ryan Ruiz, Jonathan's cousin, said he could not explain his feelings outside of the funeral home on Sunday.

"As a kid I used to go to their house," he said. "Jonathan was older, so I would hang out with Brittany (and) Steven. So I guess I kind of grew up with them. I grew up knowing them."

A few people who knew the family said that SK was pretty isolated and that they didn’t see him much, but here’s a few other quotes. I have seen more but don’t have time to go back and dig thru right now bc I’m at work.

Walls, who frequently went to the Kologi's house, said their 16-year-old son required special assistance and was cared for by his mother. The teen did not attend Long Branch High School, where his brother and sister graduated.
"But he was fully functional and comprehended what we were saying," said Walls, 18.

“Very hard to understand how this happened … Wouldn’t expect anything like this from him. This is out of the blue,” Joe Rios, a longtime family friend, told the Asbury Park Press. “Something must have happened because you never, ever thought something like this would happen with their family. Ever.”

Snip

“I still can’t believe [he] did this,” Mass said of the alleged crime. “I can’t understand why he flipped out. I can’t think of anything.”

https://www.google.com/amp/people.com/crime/nj-teen-allegedly-shoots-family-new-year-eve/amp/

Another quote from Mass..

Veronica Mass, 69, whose daughter grew up with Linda Kologi, said Scott was pulled out of school in fourth or fifth grade.
“He wasn’t getting along with the other kids,” she said. “The kids were making fun of him because he couldn’t read.”

"The Kologis were very caring, loving people and always looking to do fun things with their kids," Montelione told the station. "He was a good kid. He was a little, you know, slow with learning disabilities but he knows right from wrong."

I'm thinking so too njb. Even with ear protection the kind of firearm that he used, is very loud. I feel so bad for Mom (well, all of them), but she seemed to just work p/t jobs, or stay at home, with her son. This mother seemed to be very devoted.

I've been surfing to see if I could find what type of firearm he used, b/c NJ is a very strict state. You're not to have a magazine over 15 rounds in the state of NJ.

It states in the linked article below:

The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office said the murder weaponwas a Century Arms semi-automatic rifle with a 15-round magazine that used 7.62 mm ammunition.

The model is a c39v2, an AK-style rifle that the American Shooting Journal called the "American AK-47."
https://www.app.com/story/news/crime/jersey-mayhem/2018/01/01/long-branch-shooting-rifle/994342001/

Based on the article I'm almost certain that this is the firearm that he had the firearm, below, w/a 15 round magazine. More info, and pics, at the link, below picture.

If you want to see the c39v2 being shot, you can go to the 9:09 & 11:40 points of the video below. The before and after explains all of the parts, and cleaning. I'f you'll note, this fella, and the others, are experienced, one using a block, and it's giving him a bit of a shoulder kick, and you've got brass flying. You can only make this firearm fire, sold as it is under NJ law, only as fast as you can pull the trigger. This kid shot his family. Repeatedly. At close range. It's just odd that the noise, the kick, smoke, flying brass, didn't make him uncomfortable, for lack of a better word.

But it doesn't seem like he conversated much with folks. He led a fairly isolated life, w/the exception of immediate family, is what I've gathered. I've not heard of anyone really say that, Well the last time I spoke to him, he was kinda down. or He said he was looking forward to Christmas and really excited.

Snipped for brevity:

They gave some details about the weapon (maker, caliber, ammo). I was wondering if a suppressor (aka silencer) or "bump stock" were used with the gun, as well?

thank you rsd! that's exactly what i was getting at. i don't think anyone (outside of family) really "knew" him. was he hidden? was it his choice not to engage? the kologi kids seemed to have lots of friends and it appears IMO that guests often frequented the house. i could be wrong. we've heard "autistic" "schizophrenic" "mentally disabled" "special needs"...just wondering what the family was actually dealing with. and LE said they had never been to the house...thoughts?

this i hadn't seen:

http://pix11.com/2018/01/03/new-jersey-teen-suspected-of-killing-family-appears-in-court/

No one, not even family members, were allowed inside the court room. Only the county prosecutor and the defense attorney assigned to the suspect were permitted.

I doubt it. Silencers are illegal in NJ. Had it had a silencer on it, we'd seen some increased charges too because, Under U.S. Federal law, an individual convicted of a violent crime using a silencer is subject to a mandatory minimum prison sentence of 30 years (see link). Bump stocks are in the process of being banned in NJ but, I've heard that finding one, is near to finding hen's teeth after the NV shooting. Most dealers had only one or two on the shelves b/c most folks didn't really know about them and they aren't really good for your firearm, and unless you have used one, they are hard to control.

They lived in a two story, brick, that appears to have been, an apt. building at one time. The paternal grandparents, had, in some shape or form, been managing this property, since 1982, then in 1990, grandpa, and his gf, purchased the property, it appears.

That's a heartbreaking loss, to lose a home you have likely grown up in and raised your own children there, and looking at leaving such a nice little neighborhood too. Major stress.

In just looking at the pva site, this little piece of property has an interesting history. It seems it's been used to obtain re-fi loans, perhaps, then paid off, over time, and refied. IANA mortgage person at all. I know just enough to be dangerous, but it seems, to me, from looking at the pva, that this was a tight family, who may have helped one another, but it just went too deep this time, financially. Again, very stressful when money goes awry.
