The Asbury Park Press is asking a Superior Court to allow the media to cover the juvenile hearing for 16-year-old Scott Kologi, the teen accused of the New Year's Eve slayings of his parents, sister and family friend.

An attorney for the Asbury Park Press Tuesday filed a motion seeking media access to attend the proceedings. Juvenile court cases are usually closed to the public, but they are sometimes opened to the media in extraordinary cases.

(snipped)

"Access to the proceedings will serve as a check on the fairness of those proceedings, promote the honesty of the judiciary, and provide insight and education to the public about the judicial system."

(snipped)

Kologi, who was held at a juvenile detention center in Middlesex County, was originally scheduled to appear before a family court judge at 10 a.m. Tuesday. That hearing was later postponed until this afternoon.

I was just reading through Mom's Twitter after reading the article again. Mom probably didn't work b/c they were home schooling the son who did this. Dad was working a lot to make it work out. Mom played Lotto like we do. Everyone wants to hit the jackpot. The ponies might have been a guilty pleasure now and then or just enjoyed picking them, or... we all have something

It seems she had great taste in music, and a good sense of humor, and that got her through the day. Her comments about hanging herself may have even been dark humor. I say stuff like that, to my spouse, or under my breath, all the time when I'm at my wits end with another "event" with my wayward one, eg;" I'm goin' out back t' blow my brains out. If you should need somethin' come fetch me."

In one Tweet:
"When ever I need a pick me up, I watch Dave Grohl and Will Farrell's Leather and Lace duet <3 @LindaKologi

(NSFW, but Mom seemed to have a sense of humor. Thought ya'll might like a taste of it. )

I like scratch offs, I can’t lie. I lived in Monmouth County for 20+ years and the track has always been a big part of my life. Believe me when I say my parents weren’t betting big lol. But it was always a fun outing that was close to home. My parents still live there and go to freehold raceway to bet on the horses as their “date day”. Maybe the horses were her guilty pleasure, or something exciting for her to look forward to. She seems like she had a very full plate so I could understand the track being a fun distraction.

I still have a nagging feeling there is more to the story. Linda’s Twitter isn’t sitting well with me. My heart breaks for this family. They seem like a very close and loving family in a bad financial situation. Being broke and struggling is never easy, especially in a place like Monmouth County NJ.

Very sad story. The heartbreaker of this all, sounds like a proud loving everyday family, living everyday life with all its struggles, but surviving, and staying together as a married couple thru the hardships. A lot of lesser people would have bolted.

One common denominator of preventing this tragedy, after listening to all theories, the gun shouldn't have been accessable.

Report from Asbury came out a few hours ago with some new info, not much tho.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.app.com/amp/995743001

I have to say what got to me most was knowing they were all in different rooms and were each shot multiple times. I appreciate the attorneys trying to protect his privacy as a minor. But I don’t know if a press coverage could help or hurt his case.

I'm not seeing that bit about them being in separate rooms.

Wow! That was some debt they were carrying, not the car or mortgage, but the cc debt.

Thanks for posting. I hadn’t read about a lot of this. I didn’t see where it said in the article that they were all in different rooms.. I read a couple times but my eyes are glazing over it.

So there was another non-family member (20something female) who was in the house and escaped. That is new info to me, I hadn’t heard that before.

The family seems like they had been having a really tough run. I wonder if the $72k credit card debt was related to medical expenses. That’s a lot of debt in terms of credit card debt. I’m not judging bc I’m watching my sister struggle hard as hell in Monmouth county right now to the point of needing family loans. It’s a very expensive place to live in general, let alone when you have a child with special needs who maybe required extra care not covered by insurance.

The more I’m reading the more something feels off. I hope the son in custody is okay. And I normally wouldn’t say that about a murder suspect.

My spouse likes playing the lotto now and then too. I rarely play, and am not a casino person at all. I do really enjoy the trots, and racing anything, in general, but won't risk much $. My ex, though, would gamble our last dollar to try and win a nickel. Everybody needs something to look forward too. I know I do! I think there's something more there too but I don't know what. It could be the financial vibe we're feeling. Could something like a run-of-the-mill, family argument, at the time, have set something like this in motion?

I am not clear on why the finances of this family are being publicized as if they would bear any relevance whatsoever to the horrific murders.

My hubby and I do like to gamble here and there, but never more than we can afford. My parents probably bet like $1 per race at the track lol. It’s just a fun day out. And when you live in suburbia like Monmouth County, a day out at the track is fun! And it’s close by. I’m not going to be too quick to judge their finances and recreational activities bc obviously healthcare is expensive, and they have a special needs child.

That being said, there is a darkness looming over the parents. Maybe the son picked up on it? And the gun was accessible? Idk. I guess I’ll wait to hear more. Im gonna reach out to my mom and sis tomorrow in general but I’m sure this is going to come up since it (literally) hits close to home.

That's us, never more than we can afford. It's just a fun day out. Going to the track or playing lotto does not make you a bad person. I've just seen folks get wrapped up in the excitement is all. One of my kids loves the casinos. As long they don't come to me after a bad night, needing money, it's their money, gamble it if they want to. I think it may be the stress of their finances. Money is one of the biggest stressors in families, and it seemed they were under a huge amount of stress with them about to lose their home. I came from a middle to upper middle class home, but when I left, I became poor, for quite awhile. I know the stress, and I know the joy of betting $2 on a long-shot, pony and it hitting big.

It kind of appears that they were sleeping.

I wonder if this could mean that the firearm was locked up, and he found the key, or the combo.

Also from the link:

Gramiccioni said he has no reason to believe the gun owner is "criminally culpable."

Culpability generally implies that an act performed is wrong but does not involve any evil intent by the wrongdoer. The connotation of the term is fault rather than malice or a guilty purpose.

Culpable Adj. sufficiently responsible for criminal acts or negligence to be at fault and liable for the conduct. Sometimes culpability rests on whether the person realized the wrongful nature of his/her actions and thus should take the blame.

Financial stress can take a huge toll on a family. This family seemed about to lose their home. As much as one tries to shield their children, they can sense that something is not right. I ran out of ketchup one time, just ran out, and one of mine went to school and told folks we couldn't afford to have ketchup anymore. The point, the child loved ketchup, said nothing to me, but felt I hadn't bought any b/c we were not flush at the time. I was so embarrassed.
