GUILTY NJ - Kara Alongi, 16, charged in abduction hoax, 30 Sept 2012

Let's wait and see if Kara makes the media rounds. We know that she is probably getting lots of requests for interviews. If she turns them all down, then I think it's fair to say that she is humiliated at the outrage her hoax caused, and wants it to go away. However, if she appears on GMA, it tells me that she is trying to prolong her 15 minutes, and believes in the saying, "Any publicity is good publicity".

If her parents allow that I will be totally pizzed..:furious:.and can probably guarantee we will be seeing and hearing Kara's name again after she turns 18 either missing or in other trouble OR dead. What this child did was wrong, but she is a child....unlike the others mentioned above. Family therapy needed to find out the why and reasoning behind it, and punishment (community service) dealt out in paying the consequences. If her behavior is rewarded with fame....like so many others in the media ....it just further justifies bad behavior. IMO.

Maybe her punishment needs to be to follow a few missing child, teen or young adult cases here to actually see it how plays out....most of time badly. And just how frequently it happens. She was very lucky...or given grace. After a year, have her write a paper and THEN go on Dr Phil to give an oral of her paper for "attention" and how much she learned from the experience. IMO

I agree that she didn't fake her own kidnapping like the others in the list, BUT she did remain gone for 3 weeks while hundreds of people were worried SICK about her. She caused an awful lot of pain for an awful lot of people, and she surely had to be aware of what would happen when she took off and went "missing." My list was more of a moral nature than a legal one.

She went to the library at UM and saw WS and the FB page her SIL/Bro made. That's the same day she went to the police station.

Jennifer W (runaway bride) was charged and had to pay funds back. She made a call that said she was abducted, blah blah blah.

Kara made a hoax tweet leading everyone to believe she was abducted. IMHO, she should have to pay the money back that LE spent. That's not up to me though.

BBM - I just think that pure common sense would tell someone that if you ditch your entire life, people are going to worry. If you leave your car in a parking lot (even with notes inside "explaining" why you left), people are going to worry. If you leave your dog at a kennel and never come back for him, people are going to worry. She HAD to know that it would cause a huge, enormous amount of worry among her family, friends, and coworkers, she just had to. Did she know the extent of the worry, as it spread into the hearts of strangers? I don't know, but family/friends/coworkers should have been plenty enough for her to make a simple phone call. I don't know, it just completely befuddles me how anyone could do such a thing!!!! Especially someone who everyone says is a kind, gentle person. Again, she HAD to know! JMO! As for the library, we don't really know that she hadn't gone in and checked the internet prior to the day before being found. She could have known days or a week or two before that, since she apparently had access to a library.

To be quite honest, before I had kids... I certainly don't think people would have "worried" if I disappeared.

My mother would have "worried" that I wasn't here to wait on her.
My father might have been concerned, until his older daughter showed up to distract him.
My brother would have been relieved to be an only child.
My friends would have been concerned but not enough to call the cops.

When I did disappear for a week, at 15 years old the cops were not notified. Nobody was that "worried."

It is entirely possible someone might think if they just left, nobody would worry.

Now faking an abduction is entirely different and designed to MAKE people worry.

Maybe Kara felt that they didn't worry enough when she ran away last time, so she thought she would teach them a lesson.
Make them worry like they should have? Make them realize how lucky they are when she is found alive?
I don't know.

I saw Ivy's mom and little sister at the store a few days ago... Sally thanked everyone here for their help and stated Ivy is doing well and they were headed to Athens to get her stuff. Her little sister replied.. please hurry, Im tired of her wearing my clothes! I really dont think Ivy knew the magnitude of her "missing" status, nor do I think she did anything illegal. I think she thought her notes would be enough to let everyone know she needed time. Im just thankful she is safe.. Im also thankful Kara is safe. We have so few happy endings here... miracles or not.. I'll take it.

There had to be some huge disconnect with reality there, then, if she didn't realize that people would be worried. Just extremely odd behavior. And again, I'm not saying she did anything illegal, but I do think that she did something morally reprehensible.

One reason that I feel so angry about this is because these people distract from REAL missing persons cases. These are people who chose to run away in some hugely dramatic fashion, not people who were otherwise in danger. They did this to themselves, and everyone is then forced to look for them. Meanwhile, other REAL cases aren't getting the attention they deserve. And I guarantee that if Ivy and/or Kara weren't "pretty" and petite, they'd have gotten no attention at all. The whole thing is just sickening and leaves a sour taste in my mouth. They should be made to fully understand the harm they caused. I would certainly volunteer for the job if I could!! but I know it's not my place. Still, I think that my thoughts and feelings on this subject are valid and have a right to be spoken. These two cases have certainly changed the way I view things. Now if I see a case where it even almost looks like someone left of their own accord, I'm not going to waste my time getting emotionally involved or trying to help. I know that sounds extremely harsh, but it is what it is. This is what happens when people cry wolf!

It's been cleared up that Kara called 911 herself.

I don't know anything about this family's income situation, except from seeing pictures of their house. They seem like a middle class family, and I'm sure if they had fancy jobs, we would hear about that. So I don't see any proof that they would even be able to pay the media off.

just to clarify, i never said her parents' had money...i said a law firm paid someone off (or kept media etc at bay)...though i do believe they have the funds to hire someone. tennis & hockey are expensive sports. plus it was stated that they were moving to berkeley heights. the high schools used to be part of the same regional district, but as far as real estate, it's a step up financially. IMO.

But her parents would need to have a lot of money to pay a law firm to pay off the media. And playing tennis and hockey doesn't tell me they have that type of cash. Maybe we have different ideas about how much money it would take to pay off the media.

Agreed. This occurred not too far from where I reside in NJ. A lot of people were really worried about this girl, including myself. Then there is the other side of it, where people were also freaking out that there may be some sort of abductor creeping around this area of NJ. It instilled a lot of fear in people. It's unfair and takes away the resources for people who actually are missing and are in danger. I just don't understand why she did this, but IMO, she needs some sort of counseling because something is not right psychologically for anyone who does what she did.

I was checking up on Kara....glad to see she has been located. No doubt she needs help...and a healthy dose of discipline and correction.
