It's not a maintenance fee as most of us understand (which typically is a few hundred a month around where I live). It's actually what is "rent" on the coop apartments that are leased, not sold. The language if the maintenance fee being "rent" is in one of the court documents at the link I posted above. I've attached a screenshot. With apartments in the area running 2400 - 4000 a month (from google search of listings in Orange), I'd say that's 3 months "rent", and if you read the court document it looks like the property instigated legal proceedings when he got to about $5000 (and odd dollars) in arrears, non payment 2 months, which is about right.
$2400-4000 is probably too high. Maybe in Orange, which isn't as bad as East Orange; West or South Orange, that range is probably accurate. There's a 1BR in that building listed at $1,280 for rent; since he was single, there's a good change that he was in a 1BR. I think this building is mostly owner-occupied.

Looks like he's up to $9,233.87... $7,579.47 in maintenance, garage, and late fees, $1,654.40 in legal fees.

Doing a Google search, it looks like there's been no movement on this case in quite a while. The only person that seems to be actively looking for him is a friend of his.
