Sources: Children, Mom Found Stabbed at Mysterious NJ Mansion Fire; Relative Charged With Nearby Arson
Sources say Keith Caneiro was shot in the back and head, while it appears his wife and their children were stabbed
By Jen Maxfield, Brian Thompson and Mike Catalini

On Wednesday morning Paul J. Caneiro was charged with one count of aggravated arson in connection with a fire at his Ocean Township home early Tuesday morning, municipal court records show. A criminal complaint alleges that Paul set his own home on fire with gasoline before daybreak, while his wife and two daughters were inside.

Officials continue to investigate the link between the two fires and would not confirm or deny whether Paul was a suspect in his relatives' killings.

Colts Neck Fire Was Quadruple Homicide, Family 'Targeted:' MCPO

COLTS NECK, NJ —Keith Caneiro, his wife, Jennifer, and their two children, ages 11 and 8, were murdered in a targeted homicide, the Monmouth County prosecutor said during a press conference Wednesday, giving the latest on this stunning and tragic story out of Colts Neck.

But Gramiccioni stopped short of saying that Caneiro's older brother, Paul Caneiro, is a suspect in the quadruple murder of his brother and his family. Paul Caneiro, 51, was arrested Wednesday morning and charged with setting his own Ocean Township home on fire earlier on Tuesday. The two brothers were in business together.

Paul Caneiro set fire to his suburban Ocean Township home while his wife and two daughters were inside, police said. Police say he used gasoline to set his own home at 27 Tilton Drive on fire at 5:01 a.m. Tuesday. His wife and two daughters were in the home at the time, the prosecutor said, but all four family members escaped, unharmed.

Either that or he wanted it to look like both families were targeted by someone else. He did not harm his own family, before the fire, and everyone was able to get out safely. jmo

IMO he set fire to his home knowing his family would make it out alive. he was capable of murdering his brothers entire family, if he wanted to kill his own family, he would have. I think he set fire to his own home to try to make himself look like a victim as well so LE would think someone came after his family and his brothers family. JMO for now

I think that’s the most likely scenario. What a dummy though, as even that scenario would look like an inside job.

Criminals aren’t always the smartest. Seems like he rode his brothers coattails all his adult life... he may not have been as smart as his bro, and maybe that had something to do with the murders.

Kind of a side note but organized crime does exist, especially in wealthy areas such as colts neck. I grew up in the town next to colts neck and white collar crime is sadly not unusual. So he may have thought LE would suspect the murders and house fires were organized. Just a guess.

Yeah, but even organized crime doesn’t commit crimes like that. They don’t wipe out families, especially in this way.

That’s undoubtedly where the narrative would have gone though, that this was a mob hit against two brothers with shady business dealings or something.

It’s juicy, but doesn’t happen with any regularity.

@bears10 I actually can’t find a single US case where an organized crime entity, like the mob, has wiped out a family. Do you know of one?

Off the top of my head, no. But I’ve certainly seen cases of innocent family members being killed just because they were there. Meaning criminals may not intend on killing an entire family. My phone is on 6% so can’t really look into it more for ya.

I was afraid it was something like this...

I don't know about the mob, but the drug cartels will kill any and everyone in sight.

I do feel like the answer might be in why the kids and wife were stabbed, but the father was shot. The fire came after the murders inside the house...and it doesn't appear KC was burned (as of yet). The other brother, PC, left his house at noon. His daughter asked a neighbor to use the restroom before the family drove off.

I think PC could have killed the family earlier, but would he drive to his brother's house with his wife and kids in the car to torch the house? Fire and rescue were called, or there, at 12:38.

This makes no sense.

I thought so too, but that is not his mugshot, this is it.

Yes, thank you. He looks like a madman in the mugshot, IMO. Stark difference from his driver’s license photo.
