Norelis Mendoza, A South Jersey mom who was reported missing on Mother’s Day was found dead in North Jersey

A New Jersey mom who was reported missing on Mother's Day was found dead off a highway on Wednesday, authorities said.

The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office announced Wednesday that the death of 32-year-old Norelis Mendoza, of Lindenwold, is being investigated as suspicious.

Mendoza's body was found May 17 off Route 440 in Bayonne, near the Jersey City border, the prosecutor's office said in a news release. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her cause and manner of death are pending the findings of the regional medical examiner's office.

"We've been searching the area looking for any signs anybody had seen her," Mendoza's cousin, Giovanni Molina, told NBC 10 Philadelphia. "She left her mom's residence on Saturday, that was the last contact for family. She called her phone and it didn't go through."

"It's devastating because of the amount of time, especially...That gave four days of agony, meaning that we had no idea where Norelis could possibly be," Molina added, per the outlet.

The woman's family believed she may have been the victim of domestic from her ex-boyfriend. It is not clear whether or not Mallard and Mendoza had a relationship. The family said a restraining order had been taken out against the father of her children and that he has a history of violence.

Mendoza was seen talking to a man on video the night she disappeared while she was in downtown Jersey City, CBS New York reported.

"We didn't know who she went out with at the time. We didn't know if she got in a vehicle, if she walked anywhere," Geovanni Molina, Mendoza's cousin, said.

"Norelis is deeply loved; we will not stop protecting, supporting, and loving your girls," the fundraiser description reads. "We won't stop until we get justice for you. Rest in paradise Beautiful Angel. We will take it from here with everyone's help."

More children who will live their lives without the love and protection of their Mother
When does it end?!!

Like others, Norelis did the right thing in filing a retraining order - but it seems not to be worth the paper it's written on!!
How can these women protect themselves?

Moo...restraining order goes both ways. You phone the police if they contact you, you phone the police if you see the person in your vicinity....you never never talk with them. Police can do nothing if you do not play by the rules your self. This is not victim blaming but there is no place for little chats with the ex. You phone the police immediately. The police do not like people breaking restraining orders. It is a deadly serious situation. Moo

A simple Google search brings up case after case of murdered women who lived in absolute terror of the person they filed a RO against, they did contact LE, but were still killed.

As for the women you refer too, nothing, not even allowing "little chats with an ex" is an excuse for violence or murder. I'll leave this alone, as I get a little hot under the collar on this topic.

Moo..there no excuse for violence, I agree. Just saying you need to remember why you have that restraining order...moo

Agree. But we have no evidence that she had been talking to this ex. She may have been out somewhere and he showed up. Whatever the circumstances of her being in contact with him, there was no reason to kill her. DV just has to stop. I wish her family, especially her kids, peace. If this murdering man is their father, they have a heavy burden to bear.

ETA: There are many people who do all they can to avoid the abuser but still end up dead or horribly injured. This is the nature of escalating DV.

Video surveillance allegedly spotted Mendoza with Mallard at the American Dream Mall on May 13 to May 14 between the hours of 10:20 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. They arrived in a blue Dodge RAM that was registered to Mendoza and operated by Mallard, according to authorities.

Video later spotted the pair outside a bar on the 200 block of Bay Street in Jersey City and they were reportedly later seen at a McDonald's on Communipaw Avenue around 3:53 a.m. with Mallard driving the Dodge Ram and Mendoza in the passenger's seat.

Around 4:31 a.m., video obtained by police allegedly shows the victim running toward the intersection of Burma Road and Thomas McGovern Avenue as she was hit by the Dodge Ram from behind. According to court documents, the Dodge Ram, with Mallard allegedly behind the wheel, then makes a U-Turn and hits Mendoza again, running her over.

Mallard is accused of placing the woman's body in the passenger's seat and driving to a railroad track parallel to Rt. 440 South where Mendoza's body was later found on the afternoon of May 17.

Authorities say video showed the Dodge Ram near the railroad at Rt. 440 South and Mallard was also later spotted the following morning washing and vacuuming the interior and exterior of the vehicle.
