Rashid Bynum, a 28-year-old from Portsmouth, Virginia, faces first-degree murder and second-degree weapon possession charges in the killing of Eunice Dwumfour, the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office said Wednesday.

It took law enforcement nearly four months to make an arrest the Feb. 1 death of Dwumfour, who served on the Sayreville Borough Council. Bynum was finally nabbed by police on May 30. Investigators have said Bynum knew Dwumfour, but did not detail how well they knew each other. The only connection between the two police have is that the suspect was linked to the church Dwumfour attended.

Dwumfour was a pastor in a prosperity gospel church, Champions Royal Assembly, that is based in Nigeria, and she got married there in November to a fellow pastor from Abuja. She was also an officer of a related entity, the Fire Congress Fellowship, that has a branch in Virginia. Bynum was listed in her cellphone contacts under that group’s acronym.

"A search of the victim's phone revealed Bynum as a contact with the acronym FCF," said Ciccone.

Oh, geez…knowing both were affiliated with the same “prosperity gospel“ church (which, based on my very basic understanding, generally hold that the more money an individual gives to their church/church leaders in the present, the greater the monetary rewards God will “bless” them with down the road), I wonder if perhaps the accused murderer was mad that his monetary gifts to the church ED led weren’t being “rewarded” quickly or lavishly enough…

In here ED is quoted as saying to her followers, "You're not giving to (the church leader)," she said. "You're giving to the spirit that is backing him. And what does that spirit do? Works to your advantage."

If I was a financially-struggling person in this church, I might get pretty upset if my spiritual leader was living a lavish lifestyle that I bankrolled while exhorting me to give more, more, more, even as I continued to struggle…

Dwumfour, a pastor at Fire Congress Fellowship, had met Bynum years earlier when recruiting people to join her church. He relocated to New Jersey and lived with Dwumfour and other church members but, after failing to follow religious practices, he was asked to return to Virginia, according to court papers.

“Each witness has a piece of the puzzle that allows you to follow the digital trail and find that Rashid Bynum is guilty of all of the charges,” he said.

“There is no motive because my client is not the one who committed this murder,” Ashley said.

Dwumfour's sister grabbed a tissue to wipe her eyes, and her cousin left the courtroom crying when police bodycam footage of Dwumfour’s body slumped in her car was shown.
