Brazilian Custody Battle: N.J. Congressman Bargains for Boy's Release
N.J. Congressman: 'They Failed,' Wants Economic Threat With 'Bite'

................snip.....................

"Moral persuasion only goes so far," Rep. Chris Smith, D-N.J., told "Good Morning America" today. "They need to follow the Hague Convention. This is probably the quintessential case of child kidnapping. ... They have failed. ... What else is left?

"We have to say that preferential trade ... will be suspended from Brazil unless they resolve the Goldman case and get on the right path for other outstanding cases."

Smith's unorthodox proposal would cost Brazil billions of dollars in duty-free benefits in one year alone, Smith said.

"I wrote human trafficking laws; they have to have economic bite," Smith said. "Using trade [as a] lever gets the attention of offending

The Brazilian Supreme Court meets tomorrow to make a decision on the 'stay' placed by the one supreme court judge last week. I just read where the step-father has requested to speak tomorrow. I wish David were there to speak to them as well. Hopefully his attorney will be there!

The Brazilian AGU will be present to speak as well - they are for returning Sean to the US.

Many many prayers going up right now to bring this child home to his only father - David Goldman!

Brazil court rebuffs bid to block boy's return

SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazil's Supreme Court on Wednesday rebuffed a bid by a political party to stop a 9-year-old boy from being taken to the United States to live with his father. But the boy's return to the U.S. is likely to be delayed by further legal appeals.

Praying for Sean and his family!
I hope he is home with his dad very soon!

Poor little guy. Of course he would be frightened to move with his daddy, since all he's ever really known is living with his step-family. It's natural to be afraid of stuff that is unknown to us. I can guarantee you this, though. His dad loves him and would do everything in his power to make the transition as easy as he could, and in a month or two this boy will be comfortable and happy and excited to be with his dad.

I feel that this step family has completely brainwashed this child. After all, during the first visit the dad was allowed to have, they had a different doctor who accompanied him. During the session, the doctor left the dad and child alone for a while. During that time, the boy asked his dad why he hadn't been to see him?

The next day, a different doctor was with the boy because the step-dad was angry that the first doctor had left the father alone with the child. (the doctor was just outside the door)

With the second doctor, he stayed right there and listened to everything the two said to each other. The dad said the child wasn't the same the next day, more distanced. :(

I believe the step dad wants the boy because his grandparents have money. He's not in it for love, he's in it for $$$$$$$

I'm just glad the child was allowed to be heard.

I also hope the decision reached isn't based on the laws...but only on what's best for the child's well being

I question the moral values of the step-father for discouraging a relationship with the boy's dad. It sounds very selfish.
Sometimes what a child wants isn't what's in his best interests.

What's very telling, IMHO, about the step father, is this is his j o b. Working for families who's children have been taken from them and held within the bounds of Brazil. He knows all the ins and outs, and he KNOWS all the heartbreak too.

Yet here he is, doing the same thing.

Telling, very telling.

I wasn't aware of that.

I wasn't aware of that.

Oh yes. He's an attorney and represents people who are trying to get their kidnapped children, or let's say custody disputed children, back to them.

That's what I meant, he knows all the ins and outs. He's now using the laws to HIS advantage.

PS...at least that's what I understand. I could be wrong. ;)

This case is so very sad. I want to believe all of the adults will do what's best for this little boy. But at this stage and under the circumstances, it's difficult to keep the faith. The stepfather has no legal or biological claim to Sean, so you have to wonder what his motives really are. The bio dad clearly loves his son and wants to raise him here in the states, where he was born and has a loving family waiting for him. But at this point, would it really be best to take him away from the only life he knows? I just don't know. I don't think it's entirely black and white.

If that's the case, he's more twisted than I thought.
As well as being a hypocrite.

Please don't think I'm attacking you. This is just the first thing that came to mind when I read your post. Matthew Mcconaughey's closing statement in the movie "A Time to Kill" had a major and sometimes irritating impact on me.

Pretend you're this little boy's father or mother, who should he be with ?

Sean is a victim in this as well!

Sorry for cutting everything else out of your post but this stood out to me because as far as I am concerened Sean is THE victim.

My comments before about the father getting a job in Brazil - I said it was what I would do. If that was my child I would do whatever I had to be in his life. If it meant uprooting my life and scraping by in an unfamiliar country - I would do it because I believe to a true parent the child would come first. I am not saying it would have been fair to him just that it was what I would do.

For me, it's not a question of right or wrong. It's not even a question of where he should have been all this time. It's not a question of who does he "belong" to.

For me the only question in my mind is...... what is best for the boy, right now.

I would do the same!
