"As a Cumberland County jury looked on Tuesday, prosecutors presented a pair of bloodied and damaged kitchen knives and a pair of blood-stained jeans during the trial of a man accused of stabbing his estranged wife to death in 2016....
New Jersey State Police Detective Michael Hughes testified for most of Tuesday morning about evidence recovered at the scene, including the knives, which were found on the floor behind the kitchen stove, and the size-32 Wrangler jeans, which were found in a bedroom....
State Police Detective Sgt. Eric Crain, a crime scene investigator, testified in the afternoon session about the palm print, saying he found 25 points of comparison that proved a match for Monell’s palm print....
Monell, dressed in a dark suit with white dress shirt, looked straight ahead most of the time and didn’t appear to look at the projection screen where prosecutors displayed images of the crime scene, including grisly photos of O’Shea-Watson’s body on the living room floor....
As prosecutors worked their way through bags and boxes of evidence, members of Watson-O’Shea’s family, including her mother, looked on quietly. Emily O’Shea declined to comment on the case until the trial concludes.
Monell rejected a plea deal in October under which he would have faced 30 years to life in prison. He faces a mandatory life sentence without parole if convicted at trial.
The trial will resume Thursday morning."

"BRIDGETON – The 14-year-old son of murder defendant Jeremiah E. Monell testified for more than an hour on Thursday, providing a graphic account of watching his father choke and then stab to death his mother as she lay helpless on her living-room floor....
The Daily Journal is using initials to identify the son because of his age.
JWM took the stand twice on Thursday, first in an unsuccessful prosecution move to introduce evidence about a prior domestic violence incident. That incident, in April 2016, resulted in a restraining order against Monell, one he allegedly violated by going to the victim’s home the day she was murdered.
“How was your mother laying when your dad stabbed her?” county Assistant Prosecutor Charles J. Wettstein asked.
“Full on the ground. Just shocked and just not moving, really,” JWM replied.
“What do you remember seeing?” Wettstein asked.
“My father stabbing her, and that’s all I saw,” he said. “I looked away.”
After that, the boy said, he just heard “the gushing of him stabbing” his mother. He retreated to his bed, getting under his blanket and crying.
The boy appeared to avoid looking at his father while on the stand, except when asked to name the person he saw attack his mother and to point out his father as that man. The defendant was restrained but watched his son...."
