An Essex County man has admitted to embezzling federal benefits intended for the disabled child of his former girlfriend, shortly after her disappearance, U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger announced.

Federal officials said Asmar Earp, 37, of Newark, pleaded guilty on June 26, 2024, before U.S. District Judge Evelyn Padin in Newark federal court.

On December 24, 2017, V.W. went missing and has not been found since. Six days after her disappearance, Earp gained control of V.W.'s son's benefits by changing the PIN code on the debit card used to access those funds.

In March and April 2018, Earp also fraudulently used V.W.’s name, date of birth, and social security number to receive replacement debit cards to continue accessing and using V.W.’s son’s benefits.

“From December 2017 through February 2020, Earp and others acting at his direction repeatedly and fraudulently took the money intended to help V.W.’s son and used it on themselves,” the attorney’s office said in a statement.

In total, Earp caused the SSA to pay him approximately $19,797 in SSI payments that were payable to V.W. as her son’s representative and intended exclusively for his benefit.

A judge sentenced a New Jersey man to federal prison after he pleaded guilty to stealing nearly $20,000 in benefits meant for his missing girlfriend’s disabled son, federal prosecutors say.

“Her whereabouts remain unknown,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office said in an April 14 news release.

Her former boyfriend, who’s now 37 and still lives in Newark, was sentenced April 3 to three years and two months in prison on charges of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, court records show He was also sentenced to an extra eight months in prison, according to prosecutors, because he violated conditions of his supervised release.
