According to law enforcement officials, Pereira died after being trapped under a 30-foot slab of concrete.

Pereira was one of three workers involved in the incident. Police said that two workers -- who suffered minor injuries -- were on the eighth floor balcony at the Spinnaker Condominiums on 3600 Boardwalk around 2:30 p.m. while Pereira was on the seventh floor balcony below.

Officials said the eighth floor balcony then collapsed onto the seventh floor balcony, trapping Pereira on the lower floor underneath thousands of pounds of rubble.

The Spinnaker's website:

What a sad thing to happen. Workers doing their jobs and then the collapse onto the worker below. The inspectors will be there soon, IMO, to see what made it happen.
So sad for the worker's family. SMH.

More coverage and views from Fox 29. This is off-season along the Jersey Shore, which is why the building is mostly unoccupied.
The building was mostly unoccupied at the time of the collapse, according to officials, but five people were evacuated.

All the decks near where the incident occurred are currently being stabilized. Private engineers will further evaluate the building after the affected tower is considered safe.

A Yardley-based contractor has been fined $18,082 following an investigation into the February collapse of a balcony that killed a construction worker at an oceanfront building in Sea Isle City.

A citation notice from the Occupational Safety & Health Administration detailed the findings of a probe into the Feb. 24 accident at the Spinnaker Condominiums, where Ferguson Contracting was doing work on the exterior of the South Tower. The condo complex is on the Promenade between 35th and 37th streets.

In March, the Press of Atlantic City reported that the city's construction office had ordered work at the site to stop on the day of the accident, citing the lack of a permit for work on the South Tower. The building, constructed in the 1970s, was deemed an unsafe structure that required its balconies to be vacated until an engineering report was completed.
