N.J. father slapped with restraining order hours before allegedly throwing infant from Parkway bridge

February 17, 2010, 9:30PM

He was an aspiring lawyer, a college senior who won a prestigious internship last year with the Attorney General’s Office in Washington, D.C. His father called him studious and devout.

But 21-year-old Shamsid-Din Abdur-Raheem, authorities say, also harbored a temper, one that led his estranged girlfriend to seek a restraining order against him Tuesday morning.

Less than eight hours after that order was granted, the Atlantic County man kidnapped the couple’s 3-month-old daughter from an East Orange apartment and headed south on the Garden State Parkway. Abdur-Raheem would later tell police he pulled over on the Driscoll Bridge, high above the icy Raritan River, and held the baby over the railing.

Then he let go.

Abdur-Raheem, whose Facebook page says that he’s studying criminal justice at Stockton College, has the “Goal of becoming an attorney!” and worked as an intern for the U.S. Attorney General’s Office from January 2009 to April 2009, was arrested on charges of kidnapping, attempted murder, two counts of aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

I hope he didn't throw her in, but I'm afraid he probably did. I cannot understand what makes men do these things.

I'm so angry. I have no other words.
I think I'm done with crimes in the news, the pass week has been horrible, I don't understand why I come here.

I feel the same way. Sometimes I feel like I owe these little ones something...they're here for such a short time, that I owe it to them to read their story, to look at their pictures, and to grieve.

I pray this little baby is found safe.

N.J. State Police resume search for infant allegedly thrown from Parkway Bridge

February 18, 2010, 5:15AM

The three month old was allegedly taken from her grandmother's arms inside a South Harrison Street apartment Tuesday afternoon when authorities say Shamsid-Din Abdur-Raheem assaulted the elderly woman, punching and choking her before snatching his daughter and speeding off in his car. The 21-year-old also may have struck the elderly women with the vehicle during his flight.

After allegedly dropping his daughter in the river, Abdur-Raheem drove to an Atlantic City mosque, Masjid Muhammad, and confessed to an imam, according to authorities and the suspect’s father, Muhsin Abdur-Raheem. Abdur-Raheem then traveled to another mosque in Camden County and, ultimately, to his father’s home in Winslow. It was Muhsin Abdur-Raheem who notified police his son was there.

The 21-year-old then told local police he pulled over on the Driscoll Bridge sometime during rush hour, and dropped his infant daughter into the icy Raritan River.

River search resumes for missing infant
Inquirer Staff Report

Police have resumed the grim search for a 3-month-old girl whose father told investigators he threw her off a Garden State Parkway bridge into the frigid waters of the Raritan River on Tuesday.

The search for Zara Malani-lin Abdur involving police boats, helicopters and dogs was called off last night because of darkness.

Officials say there is little chance the child is alive if she was indeed thrown off the bridge.

Her father, Shamshiddi Abdur-Rahman, pleaded not guilty today at his awaiting arraignment on kidnapping, attempted murder, assault and related offenses in Newark, the Associated Press reports.

He was arrested Tuesday night at his parents home in Camden County hours after allegedly abducting the infant from her maternal grandmother in East Orange and fleeing down the Parkway.

NEWARK — The 21-year-old man accused of abducting and throwing his 3-month-old daughter off the Driscoll Bridge in Sayreville was arraigned this morning via a video hook-up on charges of kidnapping, endangering the welfare of a child, attempted murder of the baby's grandmother and aggravated assault.

N.J. Attorney General orders probe on 4-hour gap between baby abduction, Amber Alert

Acting Attorney General Paula Dow today ordered an investigation into why four hours passed without an Amber Alert being issued for the baby girl allegedly abducted by her father, then apparently tossed into the Raritan River.

"The attorney general instructed the State Police to take a closer look at the time-line and to see if there needs to be some tweaking of the Amber Alert," said Paul Loriquet, spokesman for the attorney general.

Authorities have said East Orange police were not ready to post an Amber Alert for Zara Malani-Lin Abdur-Raheem until 8 p.m. Tuesday, four hours after she was taken. By that time, Abdur-Raheem was in custody, telling police that he had pulled over on the Garden State Parkway and thrown his daughter into the Raritan River from the Driscoll Bridge in Middlesex County.

Baby Thrown from N.J. Bridge Has Slim Survival Chance; Father Pleads Not Guilty to Attempted Murder

NEWARK, N.J. (CBS/AP) New Jersey officials fear they may never find 3-month-old Zara Malani-lin Abdur-Raheem, believed to have been thrown off a bridge by her father.

Teams with boats, dogs and helicopters have found no sign of the infant in their third day of searching under a river bridge on the Garden State Parkway.

State Police Sgt. Julian Castellanos said the mission is still a rescue attempt, even though the odds of a baby surviving this long are slim.

If he didn't throw the baby off the bridge, why hasn't she been found?

Not singling out this post for my above comment. HOW does someone like this go through school, internships etc. without someone noticing the guy is a ticking timb bomb? Surely if he was angry enough to not only toss this child off a bridge, but to punch an old lady AND hit her with his car.... SOMEONE SOMEWHERE saw more than hints of this guys temper, and NOT just his childs mother! :furious: :furious: :furious:

I pray she is ok, but I am afraid if he hasn't at least confided in his family with where this child is, the outcome is not going to be good. :(

I just found this thread and this is absolutely awful! Another child used as a weapon of vengence... I don't know how many more of these cases I can deal with.

FYI - I am originally from this area and visit frequently. The Driscoll Bridge which carries the Garden State Parkway over the Raritan is a huge bridge and very heavily traveled. It's not the sort of place people just pull off to the side of the road. It's a very hazardous place. If he stopped on this bridge in daylight, someone must have seen him, as I've said, it would be something very unusual. If someone would just call and report it, we would know that it is likely he threw that precious one into the river.

On the other hand, if nobody calls, maybe she is still alive and hidden somewhere.

If this was during rush hour traffic, then do they have confirmation from drivers that he was seen there throwing her off the bridge or are they going off his statement only?

N.J.'s Amber Alert procedures need review

The Attorney General’s Office is rightly investigating why police did not issue an Amber Alert on Tuesday when 3-month-old Zara Malani-Lin Abdur-Raheem was abducted in a violent attack on her grandmother.

By the time State Police were ready to issue the alert four hours later, her father was in custody and telling them he had thrown the infant off the Garden State Parkway bridge over the Raritan River.

snip

Authorities say he punched and choked the child’s maternal grandmother before snatching the baby from her East Orange apartment and fleeing in his car. The questions that must be answered are whether information about the violent abduction — and the fact that a restraining order had just been issued against the father — was mishandled or misjudged, and by whom.
