Father accused of throwing infant from N.J. bridge is placed under suicide watch

ESSEX COUNTY -- The man accused of killing his 3-month-old daughter by throwing her into the frigid Raritan River last week is under suicide watch and is being held alone in a jail cell for his own protection, authorities said today.

When Shamsid-Din Abdur-Raheem, 21, exhibited some behaviors that concerned prison officials at the Essex County Correctional Facility, where he is being held, they charged a psychiatrist to watch him, said Alfaro Ortiz, director of the jail.

“Nothing serious but enough to cause concern,” said Ortiz, who would not go into detail on what Abdur-Raheem said or did. “We are concerned about his psychiatric status. We want to make sure he’s mentally safe.”

I understand the evidence that they have against her, I'm curious as to the things that could lead to an acquittal or a not guilty verdict.

Missing Infant's Body Found Along N.J. River

New Jersey State Police are working to identify an infant whose body was found along the Raritan River in Sayerville, a location in which a man was said to have thrown a three-month-old baby from a bridge in February.

According to police, shortly after 8:30 a.m. people walking the southern bank of the Raritan River located the infant just east of the Route 35 bridge, also known as Victory Bridge.

The clothing and wrappings in which the child was found are consistent with the descriptions given in relation to Zara Malani-Lin Abdur-Raheem, the 3-month-old who has been missing since being abducted by her father on February 16.

The New Jersey State Medical Examiner's Office removed the body and an autopsy will be preformed. Police say Zara's mother has been notified of the discovery, however the infant is being considered unidentified until DNA test results are known.

New Jersey state police said a body found Saturday near the Raritan River may be that of a 3-month-old girl allegedly thrown off a highway bridge by her father earlier this year.

Clothing and wrappings in which the child were found are consistent with the descriptions given in relation to three-month-old Zara Malani-Lin Abdur-Raheem, state police spokesman Sgt. Stephen Jones said.

But he said the infant is considered unidentified until DNA testing or other means can prove her identity.

Autopsy: Baby Found Near NJ River Drowned

Autopsy results show an infant whose body was found on the banks of a New Jersey river drowned.

Authorities are awaiting DNA tests to confirm the body is a 3-month-old girl whose father is accused of throwing the child off the Driscoll Bridge into the Raritan River more than two months ago.

State Police Sgt. Stephen Jones says officials believe the body is Zara Malani-Lin Abdur-Raheem because of clothing that was found with the infant on Saturday.

N.J. Amber Alerts will be used in family kidnappings

New Jersey law enforcement officials today announced revised guidelines for the Amber Alert system, which broadcasts emergency alerts after child abductions.

The guidelines say the alerts can be issued in cases where a child is kidnapped by a family member. The state's current rules discourage issuing the alerts, used to notify the public about missing children, in domestic custody cases.

[snip]

The policies are in response to the death of Zara Malani-Lin Abdur-Raheem, a 3-month old girl who was allegedly abducted and thrown from the Driscoll Bridge by her father in February. Although law enforcement agencies were notified, an Amber Alert was not issued in the case.

[snip]

Although an alert would not have saved Zara Abdur-Raheem, Attorney General Paula Dow has said the case showed the need for changes in the system.
