GUILTY NM - 11 children found in "filthy" compound with little food, training to commit terrorism, Taos, Aug 2018

  • #381

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Jurors on Tuesday convicted a father of terrorism charges in a case that stemmed from the search for a 3-year-old boy who went missing from Georgia and was found dead hundreds of miles away at a squalid compound in northern New Mexico in 2018.

Jurors reached their decision after deliberating for two-and-a-half days.
In a case that took years to get to trial, jurors heard weeks of testimony from children who had lived with their parents at the compound, other family members, firearms experts, doctors and forensic technicians.

Wahhaj’s brother-in-law also was convicted of terrorism charges, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, and kidnapping that resulted in the boy’s death. Wahhaj’s sisters were convicted on the kidnapping charges.

Prosecutor George Kraehe said during closing arguments last Thursday that the boy — Abdul-Ghani Wahhaj — was at the heart of the case and he urged everyone in the courtroom to remember the toddler’s name. He repeated it while turning to look at the defendants as the boy’s mother, Hakima Ramzi rushed from the courtroom in tears.

Defense attorneys for Hujrah and Subhanah Wahhaj told jurors that they played no role in the boy’s death and were only at the compound to care for their own children as they endured inhospitable conditions that included cold temperatures and harsh winds. They talked about how one of the women searched the internet to find information on trapping squirrels and birds, so the family could eat more.

A sentencing date has yet to be scheduled.

According to prosecutors, the charges related to kidnapping resulting in death carry a mandatory life sentence. The charges of providing support in preparation for terrorist attacks on U.S. government officials and employees are punishable by up to 15 years in prison, while the charge of conspiracy to kill a government officer or employee carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.

*Maryam Jany Leveille (35/now 40) (wife of Siraj) plead guilty to a federal firearms charge & a conspiracy charge & faces up to 15 years in prison. @Seattle1 - just wondering if the Federal court site (#1:18-CR-02945-WJ) might have a sentencing date yet? Or it won't be scheduled for awhile?

TIA! :)

Jany Leveille, one of the five people charged in connectionto a federal raid on a compound in Taos, took a plea deal before the other suspects went to trial. Her plea deal was unsealed by the courts Thursday.

Leveille pled guilty back in August to supporting terrorists and having a gun while illegally in the United States. That was nearly a month before the trial against the other four suspects, Siraj Wahhaj, Hujrah Wahhaj, Subhanah Wahhaj, and Lucas Morton which began on September 25. “This investigation highlighted their interest in the preparation for and desire to conduct attacks on the homeland against innocent people,” said FBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge Amy Kaskel.

Leveille stated that the group agreed to provide financial support along with guns, ammo, and training to prepare for an attack from the FBI and kill agents if needed.

Leveille admitted to transporting guns through several states before arriving at their final destination. “The defendants set up a compound in northern New Mexico, governed by their own unique beliefs and practices and began arming themselves for attacks on the government’s financial and education institutions,” said Uballez.
*(United States Attorney Alexander Uballez)*

On August 3, 2018, federal authorities raided the compound. Leveille said Siraj Wahhaj and one of the children armed themselves and were ready to fight until she ordered them to drop their guns. Authorities found guns, ammo, eleven malnourished children, and the remains of Abdul.

Leveille is facing up to 25 years in prison. She also admitted to missing an appointment to adjust her immigration status which lead to the second charge.

Earlier this week, a federal jury returned guilty verdicts against Siraj Ibn Wahhaj, his sisters, Hujrah Wahhaj and Subhanah Wahhaj, and Subhanah’s husband, Lucas Morton, following a three-week jury trial. The jury convicted Siraj Wahhaj and Lucas Morton of conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists, providing material support to terrorists and conspiracy to murder an officer or employee of the United States. Hujrah Wahhaj, Subhanah Wahhaj and Lucas Morton were additionally convicted of conspiracy to commit kidnapping resulting in death and kidnapping resulting in death.

In a plea agreement, unsealed yesterday, the fifth defendant, Jany Leveille, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists and being in possession of a firearm while unlawfully in the United States.

Armed with 11 firearms, including an AR-15 Bushmaster assault rifle, high-capacity magazines and hundreds of rounds of ammunition, the group conducted weapons and tactical training and required some of the children to do so as well. The group conducted the training with the intent to “face the nation” and kill those who refused to believe as they did. They spoke of waging jihad and becoming martyrs.

All four defendants will remain in custody pending sentencing, which has not yet been scheduled. At sentencing, Siraj, Hujrah and Subhanah Wahhaj, and Lucas Morton each face up to life in prison. Leveille faces up to 17 years in prison.

The FBI Albuquerque Field Office investigated this case with assistance from the Department of Homeland Security, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives, Taos County Sheriff’s Office, New Mexico Office of the Superintendent of Insurance, and 8th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
