Is there any specific reason they think he was from California?

I think they called some local New Mexico Dosses and those people’s relatives in California. Before the internet, it was probably harder to find all the Dosses who could know this man. Jmo

No particular reason mentioned that I could find. I'm thining maybe the Doss's from New Mexico mentioned they had family in California and thats why LE reached out to them.

MI - MI - Harold Covey, 20, Oscoda, 23 Dec 1976
Harold does have a thread already, if you'd like to read more about his case
I know who this person is. He’s my brother in-law. He went missing from boarding school in Charlottesville, VA. He had bright Red hair, gray blue eyes, was 5’8” and about the same weight as reported. I contacted Albuquerque Sheriff’s office today. His mother sewed in to all of the kids clothe their name in their shirt their initials in their pants before they left for camp or boarding school. His mother had died before he went missing but his father James Valentine Doss sent a detective out to Washington when he disappeared. Jack’s father is also now deceased but it would mean a lot to the family and his dear friends to know if Jack died in 1977. The thought of him suffering or being posted upon for years is something I’d like to help stop. I know because of his very distinct features and his name being sewn into his clothes it’s him but I have to be certain before I give this information to the one family member left that I can trust will handle it with tact.

Please if anyone knows how I can provide the proper information to the deputy in NM please let me know. I’ve never been on this site but I’m trying to help people that loved Jack V Doss to know what really happened as certain cruel people have claimed they’ve seen and talked to him.

I hope you and your family are able to get closure after nearly 50 years. It's a very long time without answers.

What was odd about the message? I’ve found speaking to people at the sheriffs department and a missing persons investigator, the medical examiner at UNM to be the most direct way to approach this matter. When I go to websites they either need vague information, want my information and or for me to pay fees. The sheriffs office knows the NAMUS case number and the other case information. Once they were given his case number - it was pretty straightforward.

I believe they’re talking about this. I got it too.
