“The victims included three men and two women, said Tom Ruiz, a spokesman for Albuquerque Fire Rescue. Two of the victims were identified as Martin Martinez, 59, a former Albuquerque police officer, and his wife, Mary Martinez, 62, Mr. Keller said.
The other three victims were not identified as their families were being notified, but Mr. Keller said they were residents of central New Mexico.

Gilbert Gallegos, an Albuquerque police spokesman, said the pilot of the balloon was among the men who died, but officials did not identify him.Harold Medina, the Albuquerque police chief, said several of his officers who responded to the crash had to be sent home later because they were so disturbed by what had happened.

“It took its toll on them,” Chief Medina said. “In 26 years, it’s one of the scenes that hit me the most, because it was just such a beautiful moment that led to such a tragic ending for these individuals involved.”

How horrific! I don't want to imagine what the victims last moments were. Nor do I have any words for the distraught LEO,FF,EMT all rescue teams must have witnessed. My entire heart goes out to all of the lives lost and the living victims better known as those who rushed to help the deceased. Sad ending to a beautiful experience.

About 35 years ago, there was a hot air balloon wreck in Utah, the balloon drifted into power wires.

Witnesses to a fatal hot-air balloon accident said passengers...

It was that day, I decided that I didn't want to go on a balloon ride. Ever.

Sad.

One of the victims was a former police officer, so it's possible the first responders/LEOs knew him and his wife. Perhaps they knew the other victims personally as well. jmo
