After her death, friends of 16-year-old Marissa Mathy-Zvaifler told each other she would not be forgotten.

For the past eight months, they have been making good on that promise.

A group of about 20 Santa Fe high school students is close to finishing a documentary film about the life of the girl who was killed at the Sunshine Theater in Albuquerque last July.

Dominic Akers, a convicted pedophile whose admitted slaying of 16-year-old Marissa Mathy-Zvaifler prompted officials to re-examine how sex offenders are dealt with, will never walk the streets again.

But, then again, neither will Mathy-Zvaifler.

That bittersweet reality was not lost on the sobbing friends and family members crushed into state District Judge Albert S. "Pat" Murdoch's courtroom to witness Akers plead guilty to first-degree murder and be sentenced to life plus 37 years in prison.
