Witness telling judge about Omaree, who he was. Begging judge for justice. I can barely listen.

Witness talking about things the other kids told her about life in the house. Heartbreaking. N saw Omaree being beaten, blood on his head. N and S have PTSD and in are in therapy.

Prosecutor talking about the times Omaree was taken out of home, saying this was not isolated incident. Defense trying to make out father as caring father but that's not true. Hearing father say things like "You make me sick Omaree." Twenty miinutes of dad swearing at Omaree, saying "F*** you!," "I wish you weren't here," and so on.

Prosecutor outlining abuse charges and prior charges, asking judge to take all into consideration. Asking for consecutive sentences. Talk about Omaree's abuse - cigarette burns, etc. - making me queasy. Prosecutor stressing ongoing abuse.

Defense - "Casaus made a mistake." His upbringing was far from ideal, he experienced abuse too. WTF??

Wants concurrent sentences.

Cousin of Casaus up now. Close relationship, happy times together. Family means the most to him. Raised a niece like a father when his sister passed away. Started making bad decisions in life when battle with drugs began.

Paraphrasing:

I made mistakes in my life but child abuse was not one. My kids were not abused like everyone says.

God knows the truth.

I forgive everybody. They should look into their hearts and know I'm a kind, gentle, loving man. I love my kids, I love my family. I'm not a monster.

I've forgiven my wife, I pray for her every day.

I want to give back everything I can. My goal is to mentor children who are abused. God this, God that.

I'm innocent of this but I'm here today, manning up.

Judge - “This was more than a mistake. I'm finding it difficult to believe it was just a mistake.”

Count 2 – 18 years.
Count 4 – 3 years.
Count 5 – 3 years.
Count 6 & 7 – 3 years each.

Total = 30 years, followed by 2 years parole, followed by 5 years supervision where no contact with minors, no drugs, etc.

No contact with surviving family members.

A man who played a part in the death of his 9-year-old stepson, Omaree Varela, was sentenced Tuesday to 30 years in prison.

Jurors said in September that they did not think Casaus was guilty of intentionally killing Omaree, but said he did nothing to stop his wife, Synthia Varela-Casaus, from beating him to death.

Considering Little Omaree was given a death sentence by SC and SVC, I'd say a 30 year sentence is a cake walk for this convict.

I would have liked to see a much harsher sentence, but I fully expected less than he actually got. I said a little prayer as I drove by the house, as I do almost every day. At least there's some justice for Omaree. I wait impatiently to see what happens with that wretched excuse for a mother.

Are the sentences consecutive (I hope)? I did not see which in MSM -- it sounds like they are, since they are saying 30 years.... Please let it be consecutive. TIA

This case really got to me on a personal level. I just want to strangle his abusers, and give a thorough lashing to people who failed to help him, despite his multiple cries for help. Besides him, only Sanda Cantu and Junko Futura got me feeling so raw and murderous.
