No More Prison Pen-Pals?

Sad. I can get that some people are lonely and for whatever reason decide to fill the void with a felon behind bars but use some common sense here. Truly sad. Maybe it can be a wake up call for some people that write to them

I have written to inmates, and I hoped it helped them in some small way to find their way again.

ETA: I didn't do it because I was lonely.

I'll only say that i hope anyone who corresponds with inmates uses a PO Box and not home address, for safety and to avoid potential scams or crimes that may come about through that inmate or the inmates fellow criminals on the outside...they can be very manipulative...but i don't think it is always harmful to write to a non-violent offender as long as you protect yourself and your privacy.

As for me, I wrote through a Jewish outreach program and never used my last name on the letters. I sent them to the org, who then forwarded in a new envelope.

My gut reaction to it is twofold:

If we are going to release an offender back into society then it makes no sense to me to cut them off from communication with the outside world. Especially if they are possibly going to build relationships that may make them more stable when they are released.

If it is someone that is never going to be released making new relationships with total strangers, then that falls under entertainment to me and is not something I am highly motivated to defend their "right" to or need to hav access to.

In either scenario it is a luxury item and should be funded 100% outside of the taxpayer realm and that includes paying the salary of the people who have to monitor the communcations. If it cannot be paid for by the participants it should be eliminated, period.

What prompted you to do it? Was it just to reach out to someone and help?
I am sure that alot of people who do it do start with intentions like I think you probably had. I am glad you kept your info private and you were safe becasue it can be dangerous. Thats what bothers me so much about the show prison wives.

I was interning with a Jewish outreach group at the time because I was considering entering the rabbinate, so I decided to hit the "hard areas" - specifically, I worked in a hospice for the terminally ill, rotated in a Jewish old folks home, and did a year of prison correspondence. It was like, to borrow a phrase from Sinatra, "If I could make it there, I could make it anywhere."

Jewish prisoners are often shunned by their families, like others, but also subject to antisemitism from their fellow inmates. This was not a missionary thing, though their thoughts sometimes ran to religious matters, but was more of a wellness check, to keep them feeling some connection to their community in the hopes they would feel supported when they got out.

In sum, it wasn't a dating thing, but an attempt to help. I hope I was able to do so, a little.

So, do I get my "Official Thread Killer" badge for this one, or what?

Lol! Nah, we were just hoping for something juicy like you were looking for a date!
Of course, I am only joking. I actually respect what you did and why. It never occured to me that people wrote to prisoners that way. i always thought it was lonely, misguided people.

I never said I wasn't lonely or misguided, but just that I didn't write letters because of that. I come to WS because I am lonely and misguided.

Well considering how you came about writing to a prisoner, I would never peg you as misguided!

I am sickened, I am outraged :furious::furious::furious::furious::furious:

I didnt want to start a new thread for this since there is already one.

Are prisoners in Florida serving life alowed penpals??? And should companies profit off these 🤬🤬🤬????

Okay look at this

🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬!

This guy murdered my dad's girlfriend. He broke into her house one night in 1982, after being released from jail for rape on clearwater beach and the bond was lowered from $20k to like $500 (that was big news let me tell you) just a day or 2 before. He then raped and stabbed Phyllis 70 something times and left her for dead. They said she lived several hours after draging herself to her living room but couldnt get to the phone before she died.
Phyllis was a young beautiful woman full of life, she had just finished her phd and was a psyciatrist or psycologist. She didnt deserve to die this way. My father has been messed up since this happened. It ruined many lives but not that 🤬🤬🤬! I guess he wants some penpals, sicko:furious:

How dare this website try to profitt on her murder AND lie about this guy's offense. Is this legal?????? Please tell me because I am going to write to this site and demand that they take it off.

BTW, this guy has also ALWAYS been my suspect in Wendy Huggy's disapearance. He was released the day she disapeared after going to Clearwater Beach that day.

Yes, you should certainly email the org and tell them his crimes are being misrepresented - he may have lied to them. It might also be an idea to write the corrections board in his area in protest. Not sure it would do anything, but they might also be interested that he's being falsely advertised.

Lets see, the first one I click on ,random male,
http://www.prisonpost.com/prisoners/view/hamilton-ci-prisoner-d96707-daniel-j-dauffenbach

Daniel Dauffenbach doesnt show what he was convicted of, but here you go

http://www.dc.state.fl.us/ActiveInmates/detail.asp?Bookmark=1&From=list&SessionID=686722980

oh and of course he's on the sex offender website when you google his name
http://offender.fdle.state.fl.us/offender/flyer.do?personId=21412

I think this website is BS! It's not the inmates it's the people that own this site profitizing on providing unknowing people with the ability to have a prison penpal that is seemingly innocent for the price of $2 an email.

They have not met the Sleuthster! I am going to think out a letter and send it to them I also want to find out if this is illegal in florida because I thought it was and both inmates are in Florida.

Off Topic but I have never had the desire nor inclination to correspond with an inmate.

I don't look down my nose at those that do though. I see a lot of missionary outreach do that, in many different religions too.

I did get to read a couple of letters once that were written by Charles Manson. The man who had the letter was working on his Masters and had written a few high profile inmates. I'm not sure what his thesis was at the time.

To put it bluntly, there is no way you could not read Manson's letters and come away that he is a sane man. He is clearly profoundly mentally ill.

So would I write one? Naw. I have enough carp in my life to deal with without any more carp.

But if anyone wants to have at it, I'm fine.

With the exception of women who look for a mate specifically in prison. I don't judge but I do shake my head and wonder what kind of issues she must have. (he as well if its a man lookin for an inmate to marry).

This is the letter I sent to the Department of Corrections

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing in regards to an advertisement that I saw on a website today. It was my understanding that inmates where baned from soliciting for pen pals via the internet.

Imagine my suprise when I saw this posting. By the way, the 🤬🤬🤬, named Francis Husted, that is requesting a pen pal killed my father's friend in 1982. Her name was Phyllis Jean Senneker. She was young, beautiful, full of life and potential. She had just finished geting her degree and was working as a psycologist with juveniles. This 🤬🤬🤬 broke into her house sexually assulted her and stabbed her over 70 times. His response to LE was, if he knew it was so easy to kill someone he would have done it long before.

Mr. Husted left many living victims, previous victims of his prior sexual assaults, my father who will never be the same again and pulls out a picture of Phyllis weekly to show my daughters, and me who cannot fathom how someone can be so selfish to take a life in such a henious way for a moment of gratification. He should have fried to be point blank.

Here is the website
http://www.prisonpost.com/prisoners/view/union-ci-prisoner-091791-francis-l-husted

From their home page
"Prison Post has one mission; to help inmates receive more letters from their families, friends & prison pen pals. Prisoners have nothing but time on their hands and letters are an excellent form of therapy for them. So much so, that it's been shown to reduce the likelihood of inmates going back to a life of crime when they receive letters of support."
LOL, please. These people cannot be rehabilitated, most are serving life sentences. They are not going anywhere that society will ever need to worry about them going back to a life of crime.

Why am I writing you? Because the ad is not only offensive but grossely incorrect. They have his offense as a simple assault charge with a 5 year sentence. He is not the only Florida inmate on this site looking for a pen pal. As a test, I picked the next random inmate male. Also from Florida, a RSO and serving time for a henious crime. BTW, they are also requesting $2 for each email to an inmate. How dare they! They are profitizing off these jerks victims and families.I feel violated by this site and since Florida inmates ARE banned from soliciting for pen pals, I request that DOC contact the website and request that they remove all Florida inmates and not accept any future Florida inmates requesting pen pals.
Thank you in advance.

Best Regards,

Cynthia Spoto-Parrott

I had a friend that went to prison. I wrote him. I think it helped him. I have a friend in jail ordered rehab. I write him too. I don't think I would go about digging up some felon I did not know to write but I have no issue with people writing to inmates or inmates receiving mail.

I have mixed feeling on this subject..Getting penpals off a website from a prison seems bizarre..My Niece was brutally murdered an if I find out that 🤬🤬🤬 is looking for pen pals I would love to warn them of his sick ways..

I did have a young roommate get picked up for being 20 miles out of his jurisdiction for his probation an they sent him to prison for 9 months.( His offense for going to prison in the first place a bunch of teenagers got drunk an got into a fight an hurt someone)He got 2 yrs for that. (Didn't know him then)
I did write him when they picked him up for breaking probation.. but I considered myself his friend an knew him.. I really learned alot about the probation an prison system to my amazement..The probation officer gets a bonus everytime they send them back to prison...WTH??? and couldn't send pics of his dog on a polaroid picture, guess they smuggle drugs that way..WTH did I know that..LOL
But now I can say years later 10 to be exact, he dropped by to show me how he has matured an hasn't been in trouble since..I knew he was a good kid when he lived with me, just a dumb teenager running with wrong people. sorry I go OT..but KILLERS< SEX OFFENDERS...don't deserve penpals. :furious:
