Number of Unsold Homes Hits Record High

My husband calls our house "a double wide trailer" on the best lot on the lake. We also call it the "money pit".

I wish I knew how to put pictures on the internet; it's very unique. I have all tile bathrooms and little crystal chandeliers hanging down in them. That teenie little mosaic tile on the floors (bathroom). Old timie kitchen, updated appliances, country curtains. Windows all across the back; deck, hot tub. sunroom, gameroom and one awful bathroom I want to remodel. The basic house was built in 1948. 1 acre lake; realtors call us and beg us to sell but we won't so far.

We've had our So Cal house on the market for about 35 days now, with only one low-ball bid of $20K less than we were asking. We probably would have considered it, but they had really shaky credit. My hubby got laid off last month and we've decided to cash out and move back east to NC. We've lived in our 3 bed/2 bath house for 2 years and it has doubled in value, it's near Manahattan Beach, CA, a really nice beach area.

We'll be making a nice profit if we could just get a decent offer. Everyone oohs and aahs over it, but no bites (besides the one) so far. I'm getting antsy, but I hear typical days on the market right now are about 45....so hopefully soon!!!! We're still getting a lot of traffic at the open house each week.

We were asking $599K, but dropped it to $589K last week. It's in a great location and school district.

Get rid of it as soon as you can.You will find a much more affordable home on the east coast, especially North Carolina (which I love). Then you can afford toilet paper and all without giving up anything. You guys may be able to get choices in what you do for a living...actually enjoying life and not paying a huge mortgage. Just a thought.

I fully agree with you. We're looking forward to living a life outside of the daily rat race. While I LOVE Southern California, the over-population and traffic is a daily headache. I'm originally from Florida, so I know what to expect from the east coast weather and have been through my share of hurricanes. I'm just ready to slow down a bit, get outta Los Angeles!!!

The homes I am looking at in NC are GORGEOUS and HUGE and you actually get LAND!!!! Way more worth the money than what I got for what I paid for my current house.

Oh, and the best thing?! My company is going to let me work remotely, they don't want to lose me, so I get to work from home after I move. Looking forward to that! And I'll still get to travel to CA for meetings a few times a year. Bonus!

Does your house have any rooms that would work for a mother-in-law set-up (adjoining bath, etc)? You could play up the mother-in-law set-up. You wouldn't believe how many people I have encountered that are looking for that. That might help. Also, I have seen instances where people want 4 bedrooms, plus 2 or 3 studies. Why not change the number of bedrooms in the Multiple Listing Service to 4 or 5 and put in MLS that it has 4 bedrooms and 2 studies? Then stage the 2 bedrooms like they're office type spaces. The problem might be that if it's listed as 6 bedrooms, you're missing out on all those buyers that want lots of square ftg, but not 6 bedrooms. Does that make sense? If it's listed w/6 rooms, everyone looking for 4 bedrooms, with extra, flexible sq ftg will not see it. It won't even come up in their Realtor's search.
That is a good idea. I hadn't thought of it that way. The people that owned it before us had a blended family like we do. That is why they built it like they did. It is a two story split...meaning that it is two story on the front, and two story on the back with cathedral ceilings in the middle. Girls on front, boys on the back. It has 2 master bedrooms...one on each side of the down stairs portions with a connecting bathroom. Then the bedrooms on the front upstairs share a bathroom...and the bedrooms on the back upstairs share a bathroom. It is the perfect set up for blended families or a place for elderly family member to share. It is just hard to sell because you have to have a need for a house with that many rooms. I hope it will sell this spring. School taxes are real high in Baytown, which is also a draw back. But a positive point is that it is located in Country Club, which has a private golf course if they want to join.

Bring it out here, everyone wants houses that size. There is still a very strong market for houses over 5000 sq feet around the coast.
I have a friend that was just complaining that she had downsized from 12000 sq feet to 8000 sq feet and she didn't have enough room for all her stuff LOL! Needless to say she's got a lot of stuff!
My children are either married or in college now. We down sized also. We bought a house with 3625 sq feet. I am having to get rid of stuff too. I can't imagine have a house that was 12000 sq feet. I thought my 5200 sq feet was a lot to keep clean. I am sure she had maids...but there are some things that I want to clean myself. I am funny like that.

Eight years ago we moved 30 miles away from the rat race, and now the rat race has moved right out to me. I guess I would rather keep the lower property values, since I don't plan to move any time soon.

I'll take it!!!! :p

Seriously, I would LOVE a place at the beach. My daughter and I were in LA from 2/14-2/21, and went to Malibu twice, and Santa Monica once during that time (SM isn't my ideal, but we were "in the neighborhood"). If I had a million bucks +++, I think I would plunk it down for the ocean view, although we like Beverly Hills, Brentwood, N Hollywood, too. :boohoo: Yet another case of champagne taste on a Pepsi budget. Drats.
