I hope you are still on the forum. I assume the family members including local son in law was ruled out through DNA? If I can ask.
All family not the source of the dna

Why do the police believe the information about the cut phone lines is relevant to getting new information? They also mention they're narrowing down the route the killer took to get in and out of the gated community.

Do they think it was someone with the phone, cable or electric company? They mention in an earlier article that they found footprints going from the back of the house to a fence that surrounded the gated community. Could it have been that two workers came into the community via the main gate earlier in the day? One stayed to commit the crime and the other left via the main entrance to avoid drawing suspicion?

Are they trying to encourage the accomplice to come forward?
we thought it would generate new leads. Last known utility employee was tracked down and ruled out.

Thanks for bumping this up. I was thinking about this terrible murder a while back but couldn't recall their names.

With the killer's DNA, there are more options. Have police considered genetic genealogy.

Great questions on the phone line, we never really grasped the point. You cut the line, it sets off the alarm. Unless you knew there was no alarm, or that it wasn’t in use, why risk cutting a phone line?

Did they have a alarm system inside, to where when you enter you had a certain amount of time to enter a code to disable the alarm before the company called to make sure everything was OK. If that is the case, that could explain the cutting of the lines, since the killer would not have know the code perhaps...If he did know the code he could have just entered and entered the code to reset the alarm. But he cut the cord to the landline. As if he knew they had no cell phone.

We assume he came in after they arrived home. No indication he may had enter the residence before the couple got home.

If the couple did not own cell phones, then that would explain the cutting of the phone line, but that would also indicate HE new the couple had no other phone to call out on except for the land line he cut.

Were there any surveillance cameras on the home, being 06 could have been, around the front door area, and or backdoor back of home. A kind of camera where if someone knocked on the door they could see them on a monitor.

One would haver to know which wire to cut to kill the phone, or he would have cut more than one.

Did they have an security like ADT security or something similar.

I actually don’t find the phone line cutting odd at all for the era. While my parents had cell phones in 2006, they did not use them like they do today. They primarily used their landline and they were younger than the Musalos.

As there is potential DNA, I know Othram would absolutely love to help you on this. I am crossing my fingers that they are already.

There was an alarm system but it was only used when they were out of town. The system was not monitored. Their HOA did not allow for alarms on the exterior. No cameras outside.
They had a cell phone but usually turned off. Cell reception in that area was very poor in 2006.
No evidence he entered the home and was waiting for them.

Unfortunately, the DNA sample is not of sufficient quantity/quality for genealogical examination.

I would still recommend contacting @othram . They have been able to build profiles out of the most microscopic of evidence that was not able to produce a full profile previously.

Israel Keyes did murders like this I think.

Unlikely. It's known that Keyes had an interest in couples but he is also known to have gone to great lengths to conceal the evidence of his crimes. In the only couple murder that he specifically admitted to, that of the Curriers, he abducted them from their own (modest suburban) home and took them to a derelict property to rape, torture and kill them. He left their bodies concealed in the basement, intending to return at a later date to burn down the property but did not actually do so. Ironically, by the time he spoke about the killings to LE the property had already been bulldozed and its fabric removed to landfill.

I think it very unlikely that Keyes would have chosen to target a couple in a house in a gated community and left all the resulting forensic evidence behind when it would have been much easier to abduct a couple from a more isolated property and take them somewhere even more private.

Whether it could have been him would depend on his timeline and travels. It might have been possible but too much doesn't match what we now know about him.

Keyes’ timeline has him at home in Washington on 3/27, and he is also actually suspected of (although he was never charged with) committing a burglary in the area that day.

There is also a record of either Keyes or his girlfriend (I’m not sure which of the two it was) working in Everett WA on 3/28 and 3/29.

So Keyes can almost completely be ruled out just by the first timeline point, and if the second one was in fact him it’s 100%.

I'm wary of automatically accepting Keyes' timeline because as Josh Hallmark, has demonstrated, he was skilled at creating the impression that he was in one place but almost certainly being elsewhere, or simply going blank. Keyes himself also admitted in his interviews that he sometimes used friends and family to create alibis for himself or to otherwise obfuscate his whereabouts or activities.

I’m extremely aware of that, but in this case the timeline hits on 3/27 seem pretty strong to me. Like I said, I am skeptical of the ones on 3/28 and 3/29. For what it’s worth, Josh Hallmark’s timeline is what I’m using as my point of reference on this.

Maybe I should have been more specific—he was suspected in a burglary on 3/27 back then, this wasn’t something that came up later after he was arrested. I find it hard to believe he would have been a suspect in that if they couldn’t even place him in the area at the time (which is ironic given what people—myself included—suspect Keyes of now!) but idk

I must say I love the idea of Keyes creating an alibi by being like “hey bud if anyone asks would you mind implicating me in a burglary? I promise it’s chill” haha that would be next level.
