In the moments before he raped and killed 15-year-old Alyssa Otremba, Javier Righetti scoured the internet for that depicted torture of young girls, a homicide detective testified on Friday.

While she lay dead and covered with stab wounds in a deserted area of the northwest valley, Righetti went back to his computer and searched again for “dead body disposal,” the detective, Dan Long, told jurors tasked with deciding whether the defendant deserves the death penalty.

After being arrested for murder, he confessed to raping another girl in the early part of 2011, which investigators confirmed.

Seven months before Alyssa’s slaying, Righetti attacked another girl in the same northwest valley tunnel where Alyssa was raped, Chief Deputy District Attorney Giancarlo Pesci said.

Three months before he stabbed Alyssa 80 times, Righetti raped his cousin in Mexico, the prosecutor said.

Before any of those attacks, in 2009 he wrapped his hands around the throat of a 16-year-old girl inside a restroom stall at Centennial High School. Righetti, who was a juvenile at the time, let her go after another girl walked into the restroom.

“What he’s done to so many people,” Pesci said Friday, “it stops now.”

Life in prison or death by execution; those are the two choices jurors in the Javier Righetti murder trial are being given.

Family members told jurors, Monday, that Javier did not have a perfect childhood and if his life could be spared.

"We were hit, verbally abused," said Alexia Righetti.

Alexia says she and her brother Javier had a far from perfect childhood. Raised by a dominating, violent father who taught his son women must be submissive.

Now, Alexia is asking jurors to spare her brother's life despite what she calls, his terrible crimes.

On deciding Javier Righetti’s punishment for the rape and murder of 15-year-old Alyssa Otremba, a prosecutor on Tuesday urged jurors to look no further than the defendant’s own words.

“I should just die,” Chief Deputy District Attorney Giancarlo Pesci said, quoting the defendant.

After about three hours of deliberation, weighing upward of 37 mitigating factors against 11 aggravating factors, the panel handed down capital punishment. At 24, Righetti becomes the youngest man on death row in Nevada.

Her mother spoke briefly to reporters after the sentence was read.

“We’re grateful that justice has finally been done,” Jennifer Otremba said. “In all honesty, this is not a win for anybody. Two families have been destroyed, and this journey’s been hard and it’s just beginning for us, as well. We have the rest of life to live without Alyssa.”

Pesci said the verdict also offered justice for Righetti’s other victims.

“He represents a threat to people who should be protected, people who should be safe, young women should be able to walk to a friend’s house to pick up a math book and not think they’re going to be raped and murdered,” the prosecutor said. “It’s a very unsettling case because it can reach to everybody’s hearts. It’s very scary to think what could happen.”
