Search and Rescue teams scour Heavenly Mountain for skier missing since Monday

Members from Nevada and California search and rescue teams are scouring a portion of the Heavenly ski resort in South Lake Tahoe for a skier missing since Monday, according to a release from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

Rescuers are searching for 62-year-old Brett Herrick of Seaside, California, who was last seen at about 11:30 a.m. Monday on the Comet Run, which is on the Nevada side of the mountain.

Search and rescue teams were called in at about 4:30 p.m. Monday after Heavenly called Douglas County Emergency Communications reporting a lost skier.

Both Comet and Dipper areas are closed to the public due to the SAR operation. There is no Calif. to Nev. access, Gondola to Nev. access, Gondola to Calif. access at this time. Nevada, California, and Gondola area are currently all separate ski zones.

Missing Seaside man found dead in snow at Heavenly ski resort – Monterey Herald

Avalanche dogs on Tuesday morning found a missing Seaside skier dead under massive amounts of snow powder, less than 100 feet from a groomed run at Heavenly Mountain Resort, authorities said.

Crews using the dogs found Herrick around 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Aries Woods, between the Comet and Dipper runs. He was in a wooded, off-trail area that was perfectly legal for him to ski, Douglas County (Nev.). Undersheriff Paul Howell said.

“What we believe happened is that he was off the trail skiing in some very deep powder, and his ski tips crossed and he went over face first and couldn’t get out,” Howell said. “It’s called snow immersion, and you drown, and it can happen when you’re in powder that’s as deep as the powder we have.”
