Both Connie Koontz and Sophia Renken, residents of the Gardnerville Ranchos, were both found separately murdered, which has since been revealed by the police to have been by firearm. The FBI has been called in, and the sheriffs office is reportedly using a forensic profile.
Both lived alone, and are believed to have been killed by the same perpetrator.
Koontz worked at Walmart. Her body was found by her mother Thursday the 10th and it was determined she'd died sometime the previous night. There was no sign of forced entry, as it seems the perpetrator entered through an unlocked door.
Renken was retired. Her body was found by a friend she failed to meet with. She was determined to have been killed at night, and there was no sign of forced entry because of an unlocked door, just like Koontz. Renken lived within one mile of Koontz' home.
An elderly couple in Reno (~1 hour north of Gardnerville) whose names have not been released were also murdered the 16th. This case has several similarities to the murders in Gardnerville, though police have declined to comment on any connection.
Is there perhaps a serial killer operating in the Gardnerville-Carson City-Reno area?
