NV - Jessica Valenzuela, 32, dead, 36 injured, car plows into crowd, Las Vegas, 20 Dec 2015 *arrest*

  • #261
IIRC, just a few miles outside of Vegas, there is a large rest stop. It is there so trucks and cars can pull over and rest. There are clean, well lit restrooms and a safe place to sleep in one's vehicle/

a beautiful and compelling post flourish , brave and bold as well, I am glad your "out" of it now -- until someone is there, judge judge judge , I was floored at the BS they system made my folks try to do obserd and that was years ago I shudder to think about what it has to be like after COngress has slashed shame shame on America

and yes, I have empathy for her , I worked with these folks and watched them try try try

Sounds so easy...

--I wonder if they have emergency shelter housing for women with children. That's a population that has a very difficult time getting emergency housing in my area, because it's the most needed and they can't just put them all in a big dorm like they do with the guys at the mission. In my brief period of homelessness, we contacted every available local agency, both in a proactive and reactive fashion (as many won't help until it's basically too late) and I'm a social services worker, so I know them all, and were put on the waiting lists...the average wait time was two months for EMERGENCY SHELTER, and 18-36 months for more permanent. They did, however, give us a bag of peanuts, a loaf of bread, and a box of Twinkies.

--As an early education provider for low-income "at-risk" families, I used to encourage them to ask DHS for help, too. That was, until I saw the can of worms that opens. They go in saying, "I need help with my child while I get sober and housing." Months later, they're sober, they have housing, but now DHS has decided a myriad of other services they have to engage in, some not even remotely applicable...or have decided to take longer to reunite than the child was in care in the first place... Point being, it's really easy to say, "Yeah, go ask them for help that is what they do," but one might as well consider asking DHS for help as semi-voluntarily turning your child over to the state indefinitely. It would be lovely if there were agencies (or more agencies) that would allow you to put your child in short-term care during treatment, etc., without the legal battle to reunite. So, not as particularly viable an option as was presented. There are places that take women with young children in treatment, but not men with children, which doesn't matter in this case, but has mattered in several cases I've worked with.

--When I was there for Halloween, there were tons of people, and the tunnels between the casinos and hotels didn't have chairs, let alone couches. There were benches in lobbies, but anyone lingering there would be noticed. I didn't see one person crashed out on a bench near a casino/hotel. I even commented that the lack of seating areas seemed odd, as if one were having difficulties walking through all the tunnels, there's no where to sit. My experience isn't supposed to be representative of anything except my own recent experience at the Palms. But, I don't think security would look kindly upon people crashing out randomly. The baby, yes, mom, doubt it. IMO. In my brief but awful personal period of homelessness, I know that even though I managed to shower regularly and go to work every day, I looked pretty haggard and carried more bags than looked necessary. I felt like I had "homeless" written across my forehead, but maybe my shame and imagination were in play there.

--I didn't realize pan-handling was an allowed thing there. I didn't see one when I was there, but I did hang in the hotel most of the time. I live in an area where we have a huge transient population (cali to seattle and back is a thing apparently, and we're on that route), so yeah, I suppose that's a possibility. Some folks might feel they're "above it," or don't want their child exposed to that, or don't feel it's safe as it raises vulnerability and raises visibility as far as LE is concerned.

--I didn't realize there were churches on the strip helping people. Cool.

--there were probably local hotlines and mental health agencies, too. People in the throes of an episode, whether it be one of mental illness, drugs, or just evil, aren't always actually looking for help. If she was determined to do this, she's need the "world is against me" woefullness going on, and asking for and getting help doesn't fit the dramatic Parisian-style presentation she was after.

Yikes.

Some people have been known to drive to places like LA or L.Vegas seeking fame and fortune and stay in their cars temporarily to save for, or till, they make some money. Brittany Murphy and singer Jewell ect. come to mind, iirc.

Speculating that since the suspect apparently had a gig in L.V. maybe it did not go well, maybe she was rejected in person, or she did not get paid, making getting home again very difficult. Did she create a drama and tragedy in one fell swoop just by putting a little pressure on the gas, turning of the wheel, back and forth in front of and into the easy, slow-moving crowd of targets?

If she is to be the poster child for mental illness, she is doing people with genuine conditions, and the ones who care for them, a disservice.
imo, speculation.

" Holloway's cousin, Lashay Hardaway, told The Oregonian newspaper that Holloway worked hard to provide for her daughter.

"She's just always thinking about her daughter or the next thing she needs to take care of," Hardaway said, adding that her cousin "makes good money."

I haven't been able to read today (been a little under the weather :flu: ) so I'm just getting caught up. Has it been released if LH had any drugs or alcohol in her system?

  • #266
Regardless of the why. Yet I am interested as many of us are what may have led up to this. She did it. Caused heartbreaking harm to so many and death to a Mom of 3. Put her away so she can harm no other. I pray her Daughter will get a better chance in life. IMO. We always seek an answer or justification. Thru that process are we constantly justifying crime today as a society? Point to ponder.

Hi my Bravo

yes we are , we are a action society- lock her up and move on, and yet wonder why this stuff is escalating - other countires are not going through this stuff , there has to be reasons -- reasonablly evident 20% of our children are starving

15.3 million children under 18 in the United States live in households where they are unable to consistently access enough nutritious food necessary for a healthy life.[SUP]

Rest in eternal peace, Jessica. My condolences to your grieving loved ones.

Thoughts and prayers go out to the wounded in body and emotionally.

My opinion , there's NO excuse for this young woman's actions. None.

I concur there is no excuse - there are however, "reasons"

'ICU psychosis' is the most studied clinical manifestation of severe, prolonged sleep deprivation. And it doesn't have to be continual wakefulness. Broken, inadequate sleep for the several months that she's been apparently living in her car could do it.

your area of expertise, how long does it take for tox to come back and do you think they will release to public?

It has been frusrating on this end - just come out and say no alcohol, we know it takes a breath why play with everyone?

We all need to put something in "order" here - does sustance relapse "pardon" what happened , no but it could aid in understanding this sad story

  • #269
Apparently there was a tox screen done as an Officer thought she was on something. While I respect your work I am a sleep deprived person who gets maybe 6 hrs a night on a good night. What is your hypothesis? Respectfully asking. Most interested.

Me too my dear; ask your doc about Lunesta it is paradise! Been taking it for about 7 years.....

We like the world to make sense. Much better to say "It was meth" than "We don't know wth happened."

I hear you CARIIS. You provided Therapy for a very different Sector than I presently do on a part time basis. It is a different world but IMO there has to be something deep seeded for a woman especially to take things out on Society. There was a time women were more inclined to take things out on themselves. I do believe entitlement is a slippery slope. The sense of it that is. I never hate the person. I hate the crime.

I never hate the person. I hate the crime.

awesome you helped me understand where I am perfectly written and that is how i process this stuff TY

IMo the witnesses are in for a horrible time, there is like, a difference between "exposure" to a AK 47 and a car -and I must share with you all -- the video of the people on bikes getting mauled really took me away -- reading and hearing about it is one thing seeing it is a copletly different expericne, and I knew it was coming , I do not know what I expected (stupid me) and that was on a "road".

This is just so bizaire ,if you are playing in the street one thing , but to be up on a sidewalk........... has to be a pretty "spinning" experience.

Threatens places where would feel "SAFE" from being run over - this is just a mess

Neat post !

I was young and poor with children also and a non supportive family, no help from anyone, I also was molested as a child and beat. I didn't run down people with a car or kill anyone. I took things day by day trying to be a better person than from which I came, not letting my past define me and raising my kids differently than what I was raised.
I hate all the excuses also, I worked my way to anything I had...someone who was with the forestry dept I would think had gotten a break or two. I did eventually find my breaks but it was on my own.
No one has an excuse to kill a bunch of strangers unless it is to protect yourself IMO. How much adversity have you overcome in your life? Did you kill people because of it? Even the people that did horrible things to you? To which I would probably understand, but I will guess the answer to all of these questions is NO.

Thanks so much. I shall try that sweets. Very kind of you.

funny

a lot of times I don't try to find where I left off, I just read "down" so next post is this

If your sinuses hurt......

Bewildered until I read it all...........!

  • #274
If your sinuses hurt try putting your head between your knees or hang it over the bed so your jaw is higher than your forehead. I recently learned that upper sinuses drain UP not down, so if you hang your head downward they will drain via gravity. Hold it that way for 3-5 min if possible and it should help the headache.

ok my beautiful grand ma (!) I want your future grandkid to walk in when gma is doing this "move" !!

thats funny !

What "reason" could there possibly be to mow down crowds of innocent people on a sidewalk intentionally?

  • #276
There was a case just like this one recently (it is here in this website) and quite a lot of people were really quick to give her the excuse of "mental illness." It JUST had to be!! I wonder what the difference is here?

IMO substance abuse!

CNN reports they are still trying to find the Father of her Child?????

They may not. a LOT of times mom was not sure, he is probably in prison - just the way it is

Do any of you find it bewildering, that on social media , as far as I know there has been no cell phone video of event - or right after - perplexs me !

It just blows my mind since I found you guys -CNN big discovery on this story today is that she did well for a while - we all found this - what 4 hrs after her name came out ! Here is their big story (today!) :

[h=1]Las Vegas hit-run suspect was lauded for turning life around[/h]

Hi Labor

They have been very "confusing" in addressing this angle. I have found it both frustrating and bewildering - it is a pretty "concrete" entity, IMO

She snapped. She couldn’t take living like that anymore. She couldn’t even sleep, because the security guards kept waking her up and harassing her to leave. She felt like she had no other alternative.

Many homeless and / or mentally ill people commit crimes just so they can go to jail, and get a warm place to sleep, and not have to worry about their problems anymore.

If you want to prevent these types of incidents from happening, then support better mental health programs. To the best of my knowledge, this stuff just didn’t happen before our current mental health system took effect around 1980.
