Noting:

[...]

... The car was located miles down a bumpy, rugged road in a muddy, mountainous area west of Las Vegas near Wheeler Pass...

“I know my husband,” his wife, BS, said. “He would never drive that road. He’s from Minnesota. He knows roads. He’s driven them all his life, and he lived in Ohio. He would never take his car up that road. I don’t even know how he would even know about that road.”

[...]

Schultz’s family said he worked mornings as a driver for Uber and Lyft. At about 5 a.m. on March 8, he left to work while his wife spent the day with their grandchildren.

[...]

“We do know that he drove someone from The Mirage to another location at 6:45 a.m.,” ND [daughter] said of information the family received from police. “That was the last confirmed ride that we personally know of.”

... Schultz was a lifelong smoker, but his cigarettes were still in the car. His wallet, usually stashed in the center console, was not there.

Schultz was a lifelong smoker, but his cigarettes were still in the car.

This always stands out to me when I come across it in an article concerning a missing person.
IMO, always a cause of worry...

Agreed. As a lifelong smoker myself if I am stranded I am taking my cigarettes, wallet and a bottle of water to keep on my self.

Your link also says (bolded by me):
“John drives for LYFT and UBER but failed to answer his next 3 assigned jobs, which is out of character for him and a missing person’s report was immediately filed.”

So, that would seem to narrow down when something (we don’t know what) likely happened to bring about his subsequent disappearance, since we know he drove someone earlier (see below). I’m sure the police must know who his last customer was. I wonder if knowing that was able to shed light in any way. (as in, what was John’s demeanor)

Family of missing Las Vegas rideshare driver posts $10k reward | Las Vegas Review-Journal (reviewjournal.com)
The family of missing Las Vegas retiree John Schultz, a rideshare driver who vanished more than two months ago in a remote mountainous area west of Las Vegas, is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to his return.

[...]

Schultz’s wife, Barbara, said the volunteer Red Rock Search & Rescue team and family and friends have been searching the remote area where his car was found using drones.

“We’ve been up in the mountains with four-wheelers, trying to search up there too,” Barbara Schultz said. “A lot of my son-in-law’s friends and Jeepers have been mapping it out, putting it on Facebook, showing where they’ve been. They’ve been out quite often in all-terrain vehicles. We are still, every chance we get, passing out fliers because some places have taken them down. We are trying to get them back out there again.”

The Schultz family said during a previous interview that police told them they are now leaning toward the possibility that Schultz had a medical episode that prompted him to drive into the rural Nevada landscape. The family questions this conclusion.

The Schultz family said during a previous interview that police told them they are now leaning toward the possibility that Schultz had a medical episode that prompted him to drive into the rural Nevada landscape. The family questions this conclusion.

Las Vegas police used his cellphone to trace Schultz’s vehicle to the area of Wheeler Pass in the Spring Mountains, the family said.

The family has continued to express frustration with Las Vegas police over their investigation. The family said police have not shared with them everything they know about the disappearance.

I don't think he's the one that drove the car to that location. IMO, something happened during or after that 6:45 am ride.

I wonder how common it is that Uber/Lyft drivers accept rides outside the app. I know in Vegas, we took an Uber back to our hotel and mentioned we were headed to the airport in the morning. He offered to take us for a flat rate - not via the app. I wonder if this is common practice?
