A Las Vegas woman died from a gunshot to the neck while driving home
Sept. 23, 2020

“LAS VEGAS – Around midnight on Sept. 16, Kamiah Bird finished her dealing shift at the Plaza, got on the highway and headed toward home.

At 12:08 a.m., Bird’s blue Nissan Versa veered across Interstate 15 near Flamingo Road and slammed into a Dodge Charger.

Medical personnel soon pronounced the 37-year-old roulette and blackjack dealer dead. Authorities first thought she died in the crash after a medical episode.

The coroner’s report told a different tale.

Cause of death: A gunshot wound to the neck. Manner of death: Murder.”

“The video provides the best views from hundreds of hours of video. It shows Bird’s car stopping which is when detectives believe she was shot on the eastbound Flamingo off-ramp. Thirty seconds later, her car veers back onto the highway where it’s hit by a passing car.

Lt. Spencer shows a speeding car which is in line with Bird’s car before she abruptly stops. Metro is very interested in that particular car, but can’t identify the vehicle.

“It’s got to be just a random shooting. That she happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Spencer said.”

I learned from this case, CO - Possible Serial Shooter Has Colorado Drivers on Edge #1, that these types of cases, people shot while driving, can be difficult to solve.

Another thing, I’m not sure people realize how often this actually happens. Here are just some of incidents from last year alone that I complied in Melissa Peskey’s thread, not an exhaustive list by any means:

Wow.
I live in a country where you can only have a single shot air rifle that you pump up for each shot like a bike tire pump, and you have to apply and register to get it, only certain LE have guns, most don’t.
As a US citizen, I can really appreciate the freedom to not be randomly shot.

I had mentioned in my above post the Colorado shootings:
A woman was shot in the neck while driving, like Kamiah. She survived, but in another random shooting incident linked to her case, a man shot while bicycling, that victim did not survive.

In my experience studying these cases for years now, it seems there can be a variety of potential motives: road rage, or random shooting for no reason, sometimes by gang members imo (initiations?). It is also difficult to determine if the victim is targeted personally and shot by someone they know.

I noticed in Kamiah’s case there was mention of the “off ramp”. This was the case in some of the Colorado shootings, which turned out to be serial shootings, currently unsolved. In these NOCO shootings, a specific Task Force was created, with members of various agencies, some agencies so classified they couldn’t even name them. Again, still unsolved.
