NV - Landlord kills tenants, he did not want to go through eviction process, Las Vegas, Aug 2021

  • #21
He had no right to harm them, matter how much they owed. He could have gone through the eviction process, even if he thought it was absurd and unfair. His anger at being taken advantage of, I understand. But we try to teach even children they can't choose violence as a response to anger.

Of course not, but lets at least get the facts straight. People think Landlords are making out great during this... they are not. Desperate people do desperate things. Not justifying murder, but if squatters took over your property, your house, and legal system wouldn't help, what would you do? Just walk away and say 'ok, you can have it'? Obviously there is more going on with mental health in this situation.
What would I do? It sounds like you think the property owner had no choice but murder.
While we "are getting our facts straight", let's not label the victims "squatters" which is a person occupying an abandoned building or unclaimed land, (still not deserving of cold blooded murder), these people were legal tenants behind on rent like millions of others who are still alive.

DA: Landlord in tenant shooting handled eviction 'his way' | AP News

“Ortega suggested Lozano go to court to evict the people living inside his home. Lozano Sanchez told the witness he would ‘handle it his way,’” the report said.

Lopez told police that he saw Lozano-Sanchez go into a bedroom where a woman pleaded for her life, multiple gunshots were fired and the wounded man ran out.

“The surviving roommate heard and saw the defendant enter into another bedroom in the house, and he heard cries for help from the occupants and thereafter heard the defendant shoot them,” Fattig told the judge. “He also saw the defendant exit that bedroom, smiling.”

The names of the victims, all in their 50s, were not immediately released.

The police version of events reportedly describes the suspect’s chillingly joyful behavior amid the killings.

What would I do? It sounds like you are implying the property owner had few choices outside of exercising an extra judicial death penalty for unpaid rent. Of course he had choices, we all do.

They did not deserve to die.
And let's also get our facts straight that he never made any attempt at eviction.
The landlord is a cold blooded killer.
He smiled and laughed after executing his tenants.

'Smiling and Laughing' Landlord Shot Three Tenants Because He Did Not Want to Go Through Eviction Process: Authorities

The police version of events reportedly describes the suspect’s chillingly joyful behavior amid the killings.

According to officers, police found a wounded woman in a driveway. She suffered from gunshot wounds and doctors pronounced her dead at the hospital. The surviving male victim left the residence also suffering from gunshots, police said. Investigators said they discovered a second woman dead inside.
Sanchez shot the surviving man nine times, authorities said.
He told a witness “he didn’t want to go through the eviction process,” and that he “wanted to handle it, quote-unquote, ‘his way,'” said Chief Deputy District Attorney Tim Fattig at the arraignment on Wednesday. Police reportedly have not found evidence linking this with a nationwide moratorium on evictions, which expired and was partially reinstated for areas seeing high rates of COVID-19.

“His way” allegedly involved expressing glee. A male witness claimed to see Sanchez “smiling and laughing” after apparently shooting one of the women and again after Sanchez barged his way into another victim room, apparently opening fire and exiting, according to the police report

And i said there were MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES involved in this case. I did NOT justify murder.

But doing a broad statement of how landlords are making money and they can afford to just 'ignore' nonpaying tenants... is NOT the case in many Landlords. I have retired couples that own 1 rental in addition to their own houses. THEY had to pay all the bills, taxes, insurance etc while their tenants paid NOTHING for 18 months. THEN trash the unit because its easier for them to move to a new one since there was an eviction moratorium. They take all the 'free money' they got from multiple sources, buy new vehicles, tv's etc (And yes, i've seen it happen over and over again here) and then leave.

My statement was that not everything fits into a little box when it comes to these issues.

My 'Victims' were the landlords themselves. They had to take out a second mortgage to pay for their tenants. No one seems to be telling those stories.

Lots of people tell these stories, but like it was mentioned being a landlord is a business. It is the cost of doing business and as such, should be handled so. These things should be expected to come up. If you can't afford the unit without renters then you shouldn't be buying properties to rent out.

A landlord should have their legal rights understood and a lawyer on hand. Eviction shouldn't take 18 months.

(Quote didn't work?)

"If you can't afford the unit without renters then you shouldn't be buying properties to rent out."

And, if you can't afford the unit -- do not sign a lease.

Remember that landlords lost the right to evict non-paying tenants due to Covid-19.

The right to evict non-paying tenants.

Landlords cannot operate their businesses according to their business plans in this situation.

Should the landlord resort to violence? No.

Should the tenants live rent-free? NO!

Is there a middle ground? Probably, but as I don't know any landlords in Las Vegas, Nevada, I don't know what that would be.

Landlords near me are sinking.

I'll ask again -- did no one see this coming???

Is there a middle ground? Probably, but as I don't know any landlords in Las Vegas, Nevada, I don't know what that would be.

Historically, wise courts have found a middle ground- in the past at least. Unwise beauracrats, however, have not followed the Court's wisdom by following their philosophies in regards to new regulations.

Courts have allowed exemptions to certain federal regulations governing housing and employment when:

A. The business employs under a certain number of people and..... the owner works on site.
B. The rental units are under a certain number and..... the the owner lives on site.

In both exemptions, the Courts noted that small scale rental or business operations were an extension of the owner's privacy and freedom of association.

The Courts might of also made a common sense and unwritten observation that disputes in homes and even small owner operated businesses get explosive fast as the owner can feel that they have lost control of their own life.

I dont think this is reasonable.

For example, if an airline cannot afford to fly empty airplanes, then they should not buy the airplanes and thus not be in business?
