Witnesses say 30-year-old felony battery defendant Deobra Delone Redden fought with court officials and attorneys after he leapt both the defence table and the judge's bench to attack Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus.

Even though it was probably only seconds, it seems like it took a long time for law enforcement/bailiff to get to the judge.

The courtroom marshall was hospitalised. This is a very dangerous man, and he just won the prize of a much longer time behind bars. It doesn't hurt that it's all on video. There's no way for a defense lawyer to 'two sides' it.

Redden was not in custody when he arrived at court Wednesday. He wore a white shirt and dark pants as he stood next to Almase, asking the judge for leniency while describing himself as "a person who never stops trying to do the right thing no matter how hard it is.“

“I'm not a rebellious person,” he told the judge, later adding that he doesn't think he should be sent to prison. "But if it's appropriate for you then you have to do what you have to do.”

As the judge made it clear she intended to put him behind bars, and the court marshal moved to handcuff him, Redden yelled expletives and charged forward — amid screams from people who had been sitting with Redden in the courtroom audience.

Previous domestic battery, beating someone with a bat, and now attacking the court. He is brutal, ticking time bomb. I hope he is locked away for a very long time. Wishing everyone injured a speedy recovery

Throw away the key and tighten up security. I’m not faulting security here, but it’s a lesson learned.

Zero tolerance. We can’t have people attacking officers of the court. As others have noted, if he physically attacks a judge, he’ll act violently to “regular folks.”

We grow weary of backlogs, but how much worse can it get when being a judge (or attorney, etc etc) puts a target on your or your family’s back?

I feel horrible for officers of the court nowadays. This is beginning to happen way too often. Whether it be an intentional harmful physical attack to spitting on someone, it is all so nasty!

Use restrain devices, and I understand he was not in custody, check his record, and protect the officers of the court and all people, most importantly. Laws need to be changed. No one ought fear for their life while during their job. Tired of criminals' having the upper hand. I get that they have every right to a defense. Rant over for now. ;) jmo

It is the clerk or judge's assistant that pulls him off the Judge. It is a good thing he appears to be decent sized and wasn't afraid to jump right in.

Surely this man should have been sitting further away from the judge, and behind glass or bars.

they gotta protect judges and all court staff better than that
the court staff were heroic in getting him under control but I can't see how that poor judge will feel safe going forward

"Female Las Vegas judge heads back to work just a DAY after she was brutally attacked by freshly-convicted felon in courtroom."

Any reason why he wasn't in a shock vest or at least handcuffed? The DM link above states he was being tried for attacking someone with a baseball bat. That should be reason enough.

I don't believe he was in custody prior to the hearing, so he couldn't have been cuffed. At the end of the hearing I understand, the Judge indicated he was going to be in custody and that was what triggered the attack. Now, why was he not already in custody, given his history? that is a good question. But it is a question being asked nationwide.

tie him to a stretcher and wheel him in there
he shouldn't have a choice
Zoom hearing from a cell?

most defendants do manage to be on their best behavior in Court even if they are out of control elsewhere IMO. Poor defense atty saying he can control himself when he leaps up...he is pretty athletic - remember the PA guy who recently climbed out of jail? would not want to be in charge of restraining Mr. R.
