DENVER, Colo. - A 35-year-old mother from San Jose has been arrested after the body of her 7-year-old special needs son was found in Las Vegas.

An FBI task force arrested Samantha Moreno Rodriguez, 35, at a hotel in eastern Denver not far from Interstate 70, Las Vegas police Lt. Ray Spencer said on Tuesday.

Rodriguez will be booked into an area jail pending extradition to Las Vegas, police said.

Las Vegas police detectives had been on their way to Denver to interview Rodriguez after the body of her son, Liam Husted, was found on May 28 on a trail in Mountain Springs, Nev., Spencer said

"We are all relieved that we were able to get her into custody so quickly," said Spencer, a homicide lieutenant who made earlier pleas for the public to help identify the boy.

Poor Liam. Does she have a record?

I have not read any information on prior arrests

During the PC, the officer said there are no reports with the police department relating to domestic violence, or family issues.

She didn’t even attempt to conceal her sons body. She left the 7 year old boy on a hiking trail that appears to be frequented by hikers often. This was not going to buy her time. What a terrible story they will get worse I’m sure as the COD is released. IMO

Samantha Rodriguez, San Jose Mother Wanted In Murder of Son Liam Husted 'Little Zion' Arrested In Denver

"At a press conference Tuesday afternoon, Spencer said Rodriguez was found at the hotel with an unidentifed male companion, but the person was not considered to be involved in the boy’s murder."

....

"Spencer said the boy’s father had arrived home on May 24 to find both Rodriguez, his son, and all their belongings gone. A recorded message from Rodriguez said “I’m sorry I had to do it like this” and said she and Liam were going to find a house in some other location.

Spencer said at the time, the father had no indication from the message that there was any potential harm involved. However, he contacted San Jose police on June 1 to document the incident, and officers agreed there seemed to be nothing suspicious about the apparent family breakup."

Susan Smith situation? Wanted to be child-free for a new love interest? Thinking aloud, speculating.

Las Vegas police, FBI discuss arrest of Samantha Moreno Rodriguez in Denver

Homicide Lt. Ray Spencer:

"What I learned in the last 10 days is how many missing children there are nationally.

I was inundated with reports of missing children from all over the United states and when I said we had hundreds of tips come in, we were going through all of those, because there are so many missing children in the United States.

And trying to make an identification from the photograph of the missing children, it is a very complicated and time consuming process."

How sad

It is interesting that more often children with disabilities are now being identified as "Special Needs" in the media when the death is reported. I cannot tell you how wonderful I think this is. Children with disabilities are at high risk for abuse, and neglect. I am glad that their caregivers are "outed" for not only violence against a child, but a child who is disabled.

That merits enhanced charges.

Yes, taking care of a disabled child is difficult. But there are numerous resources for parents. Respite care. Notify relatives, the child's Special Education teacher will connect parents to resources. I know, that if the teacher had been contacted, Liam would be alive.

Last resort, abandon the child at the police station. There are alternatives to killing the child.

Special needs and the term disabled (or the term disabilities) aren't the same thing.

Speaking about the term Disability, it is more about physical and mental inabilities while special needs are related to learning disabilities. There is one more term – differently-abled, which is used for mental as well as physical disabilities.

Special needs actually do mean special education needs as children with learning disabilities need additional support as compared to their peers. Examples of special education needs include -

  1. Social, Behavioral and emotional difficulties
  2. Multiple learning difficulties
  3. Moderate learning problems
  4. Speech, communication and language needs
  5. Autism spectrum disorders
  6. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and specific learning disabilities
  7. Multi-sensory impairment
Disabilities include all the physical and mental disabilities that affect their daily routine activities.

Thanks @Gemmie. I taught Special Education for decades. Back when all children with disabilities were called "MR", in the '70's. The terms have changed, the kids are the same.

Yeah, I volunteered in a special ed class, for a short time, long ago. I really enjoyed that. They were very happy kids. :)
