WEST WENDOVER, Nev. (ABC 4 News) - Police in West Wendover asked for public assistance in locating a teen aged girl last seen on Thursday.

16-year-old Micaela “Mickey” Costanzo was last seen, via video surveillance, leaving the West Wendover Jr./Sr. High School on Thursday at approximately 5:15 p.m.

Police say Micaela was last seen wearing white tennis shoes, blue jeans, and a light colored undershirt, with a dark colored overshirt.

Police say Costanzo was also seen carrying a black bag with white hearts.

Micaela was described as 5’5” tall, weighing 105 pounds with brown hair, and brown eyes.

Anyone with any information about Micaela was urged to contact the West Wendover Police Department Dispatch at (775) 664-2930 or by calling 911.

It appears that they do believe it is her body.

Rumor (soon to be confirmed I'm sure) is that they have confirmed it.

The rumor (soon to be confirmed I'm sure) is that her boyfriend is the person of interest... and that he is in custody.

That is at least a relief for other residents in the area... who immediately remember other cases which are still unsolved. One decade, two decades.... three or more decades later.

Awwwwwww. Not another one. What a beautiful, happy looking young girl. I really hate seeing this. So young, what could be so important in a teen relationship that it called for her death? So tragic.
 
Wiskerchen could not say whether contents of the possible grave site were male, female or even human.

Investigators from the Washoe County Forensic Crime Scene Unit will assist the investigation, West Wendover police said.

The grave was found 5 miles west of town.

The Elko County Sheriff’s Office has been called in to take over the investigation.

Deputies plan to start sifting through the dirt first thing Monday morning.

I am doubting the rumors this time around....

Simply because all the articles are saying that they secured the scene and are waiting until Sunday or Monday morning to dig.

That sounds absurd in and of itself... but if it's true then they wouldn't even know if there is a human in there yet.

A "freshly dug grave" is certainly not enough to assume that it IS a grave, there IS a body AND it is THIS body.

Maybe her bag was found or something? :waitasec:

The reporting on this case is less than ideal... there was really almost nothing until just a few hours before this shallow grave was found. This is really a case where most information comes from rumors and then later you see what is confirmed. We do not have another local newscast for 4+ hours.

I am thinking that they found the shallow grave... then their POI told them it was her. So that is how they knew it was her, before they did any digging. Like "Oh, you found her? Well, I guess I'm done anyway... I might as well tell you what happened."

They treated it like it was her body immediately... how would they know that without a statement from the suspect?

If the rumors are true... they give me hope that this was a heat of the moment thing. Guy has a crush on her... tries something, she freaks out and he panics. I'm hopeful that there wasn't any long drawn out situation here...
 
ABC 4 news at 5pm - www.abc4.com just had live coverage of the grave excavation... said they should have confirmation any moment of who it is.

KSL 5 news at 5:30pm - www.ksl.com - just said the police chief just announced that they have recovered a body from the grave... but they haven't identified it.

KUTV 2 news at 5:30 - www.kutv.com - just said they are still waiting to know what is in the grave. The high school is open and offering counseling.

Fox 13 - www.myfoxutah.com has news at 9pm.

KUTV 2, ABC 4, KSL 5 - have news at 10pm.

I would suspect there would be confirmation by then.

No family member has been asked to make an ID but the family spokesperson said she does believe they found a body.
 
7:40pm - The "breaking news" scroll on Channel 2 and 4 says that the body has been identified as Micaela. They did not break in for the press conference on any of the 4 channels if it has indeed happened.

7:10pm - Press conference in 20 minutes...

The West Wendover police chief has confirmed a body was recovered from a shallow grave west of town.

The chief says the body is tentatively being identified as that of a missing 16-year-old girl.

The police chief, the Elko County Sheriff and Micaela's family have scheduled a press conference for 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Another terrible loss. My prayers go out to her family and for swift justice. She looks like such a sweet girl, it's so heartbreaking.
 
For those not familiar with the area. Wendover sits on the border of Utah and Nevada. West Wendover is a small casino town. East Wendover is in Utah.

Google map is not working this morning. But Mickey's school is about two miles from the Casino's. Her apartment is only a short walk from her high school but I do not know how far that is.

I agree with MsF that the grave may have been a confession of some sort. It a wide expanse of an area out there and it's curious that someone happened upon the grave within a couple of hours of the search being conducted. I also heard in an early report that the person who found her was not part of the official search group but was on his own. Even more curious, IMO.
 
This is so tragic. The sad truth is there is no end to this madness. Black, White, Asian, green, purple, and brown. It doesnt matter. My wife just informed me yesterday that she developed a stalker that follows her around the gym in her zumba class, noticed her when we lived in an apartment complex, and goes to the old bank she worked at to see where she works now.

I told her the simple steps and information needed if this continued but being on WS it changes your perspective ALOT!. It's crazy how many people are oblivious to the information we gather here that goes on in the good ol US of A. Take care all, sorry for the rant.. RIP 'Mickey' Costanzo
 
Update: The superintendent of West Wendover schools confirms that a student at West Wendover High School was arrested this morning in connection with the death of 16-year-old Micaela Costanzo. The suspect, who is a senior, was arrested around 2 a.m. West Wendover police have not confirmed news of the arrest. Rest in peace sweetie. Thanks to everyone that kept a good thread for her.

Very sad all the way around. The loss of this beautiful teenager and the loss of the teenager that is being held for her murder.

These situations impact so many. :(

Prayers for Mickey's family, friends and loved ones. Prayers for her alleged murderer and his family too. So sad so very sad :(
