Bingo.
But I doubt the journal's been read by LE or the PI.

Why do you doubt it? Seems it would be pretty standard in an investigation. If they haven't, sounds like yet another dropped ball.

The LDS people I know, have booksful of journals. Notes for every day of the year, bound into Franklin Institute cases. Kind of like diaries, but preserved for future generations. Kind of like a daily scrapbook.

Wouldn't SK actually have left behind many of them?

Is that the norm for LDS folks? Seems there would be more than one, in any case.

There's been a lot of talk on some of the local radio stations this week about the folks that live in the underground tunnels here in Vegas. The author of Beneath the Neon, Matthew O'Brien, has a new book and has been making the rounds. One of the stations had a "tunnel dweller" on this afternoon and he was very informative. Said he has lived down there for 5 years and has created what he described as a "condo." He became homeless due to a gambling addiction, but he actually sounded like he prefers the lifestyle and has no plans to change it.

He did say that the majority of the tunnel residents are there because of drugs or alcohol, but for the most part, no one hassles anyone else - including LE.

Really got me to thinking...

When I was told that Steven had parked his car a couple of blocks away to walk to an event, because he simply didn't want to wait at light I just assumed everyone knew that.

To me it has always made sense as to why he parked his car at the cul de sac. I never assumed that he went to someone's home on Evening lights but that he could have walked to a street a couple of blocks over, which is what I kind of think that is what he did.

Having been there, I have to disagree. Unless he had been there before.

About Steven being in the tunnels?

He's not there -- UNLESS he showed up after August 10th (when I was emailing Matthew O'Brien).
O'Brien told me was familiar with Steven's case, but that he'd never seen him. He's familiar with the regulars, and is down there enough to spot newbies.

Since you were told that by someone, I'm sure you can easily provide authentication of that report. Your version is one I've never heard or read before.

As I mentioned in my previous email, I can email the person who told me that for clarification.

I am trying to remeber when this was said to me, and I believe it was in August. But I am pretty sure that I remember the conversation correctly, I have no reason to make it up. Kelly

We have new people here, and before they get the idea we haven't checked reputable sources ...... ;)

Fair enough. But I don't think we should dismiss theories out-of-hand based on the word of someone who isn't actually engaged in the search for Steven.

I have lived in Las Vegas for over 35 years and wouldn't have a clue as to how to access these underground tunnels. That's one of the topics that has come up with the recent conversations. Not only do tourists not know about them, but neither do most of us locals.

IF Steven is there at all, he would have been lead there by someone "in the know," IMO. It does seem to be a small "community," such as it is. But, it seems to me someone could move in and out of it unseen, if they so desired.

True. Which is why, when you mentioned Matthew O'Brien initially, I thought it would be a good idea to contact him and ask him directly if he'd seen Steven.

Maybe I'm just remembering wrongly, but I thought we started the discussion due to an article in one of the Las Vegas newspapers, in the first part of August (?). I thought he was well-publicized.

What I understood from my conversation with him, is that he IS actively involved in searching for several people. Being a private citizen, he can notify families if he does find a loved one (when LE would be prohibited from providing anything more than "they're OK"....KWIM?)

Maybe this will help; occasionally, the moderators will post a "just the facts" short TOS at the beginning of a thread. (Remember, these aren't emails - this is a public discussion forum.)

Moderator hoppyfrog spelled the requirement to back up facts included in posts HERE.

Laytonian,

Someone told me that over the phone. The person who told me that said they were told that by someone else who was a friend. I have that person's email address and I could ask them.

But this person said that Steven Koecher was following someone to an event once, and because he didn't want to wait until the light changed and to have to plow through the traffic that he parked his car and walked the extra two blocks to go to the event.

I have actually done the same thing myself at times. One of my friends always get on to me for not being patient enough to find a parking space that is close as I would just find the first one available no matter how far out it is.

Let me know,

Kelly
alot of people do that...park away from events...easy parking if you like to walk. It may be hearsay but I personaly have been looking for a connection to libraies in Overton, Mesqete, St George, SLC and how they all are within walking distance(short walk) to Temples and or LDS facilities. I would love to know the approx location of his contact with the kids on that Friday and plot that on a map in relation to those 2 places...

I think it's safe to say, Steven wasn't attending an event in SCA when he parked there.

The info about where Steven met up with the girls who were locked out is on the timeline here. As are many other facts that have been discovered.

Try Google Maps - it's a great resource.

I just think that SK's dad wouldn't turn it over to LE or a PI, unless he read it first. It's an almost-sacred thing for many people, and I don't think he'd lend it out to investigators who are far away.

Is that the norm for LDS folks? Seems there would be more than one, in any case.

Yes, it's something that's important to them. In fact, the "Franklin Planner" that many use, is so pervasive that many companies require their employees to use them. The interesting thing is that after writing events, thoughts, time management, etc, etc, the pages are removed and put into an "annual" (a pretty fat binder...5x8" paper size, with a 3" wide spine). I mention the size, because if you journaled for ten years, you'd fill 30" of bookcase space.

The binders look LIKE THIS.

Yes, I own them to. I don't do it right; they just hold "stuff" for me.

I know that it occured in St George. and that it is said to have occured at thier home. I see nothing in the timeline or media accounts as to a cross street, or address.

Google maps is a great resoarce...if I had that information it would be helpfull in my search.

Franklin Planners are so good that many companies that don't have an LDS connection still use them faithfully. I've used them in two different jobs where they were required, and then kept using them because they were useful. Not since I left the everyday workforce, though. They're wonderful if you have a life that's busy enough to need managing but relaxed enough to allow you time to write things down. If you're too busy it's like a rock around your neck when you're trying to swim :p If your life is slow, it's like killing a mosquito with a shotgun.

Or, if you were already sliding down into the dark abyss of yourself, it could look like a stark mirror of how badly your world is falling apart.

Just got this breaking news flash:

LAS VEGAS -- The National Park Service and Las Vegas Metro dive team are currently searching for human remains in Lake Mead. According to the National Park Service, someone reported on Thursday that they had found a human jawbone.

Metro dive team is currently at the location where the jawbone was found and is searching for other remains.
