Looks like it's in the paid archives now, but referenced in someone's blog.
SO...stories have been dug up today that Steven covered in May 2008 in the DAYTIME. "Up close correspondent" isn't going out at night with a flashlight and interviewing people

So....I think we've heard lots of complaints about the Tribune job, he MAY have been moved to night shift later, but he had a real journalism job there.

How many excuses have we heard, about him quitting?
Didn't like night shift?
Didn't like the cold, smoggy winter inversions?
Missed his friends?
His co-workers were "too worldly".

Frankly, I don't think ANY of the above are the real reason. He had a reason, but he was telling too many people too many versions of too many excuses.

I've been to a Kaysville City Council meeting; I wouldn't call it "happening". In fact, that story was filed the same month he left The Clipper. I'd run away, too

Nope. Not at all.

It makes sense, really. Whoever hired him, could have had him park where he did, telling him it's "safe" because it's not only in a decent community but in a one-off area not intruding on someone's personal space.

And the best way to make sure you don't get caught, is to eliminate the witness who you directed to park somewhere NOT at all connected to you.

I'd sure like to know if Steven picked up a speeding ticket anywhere.

Wouldn't the investigators on his case be able to pick up on a ticket or any other interactions with the law?

If we go with this theory, he could be anywhere. Although, IMO, the western U.S. would make the most sense.

So what's the next move? I can't believe that an article written by Steven in 2006 or 2007 or 2008 has anything to do with where he is now.

They could, if they looked. By now, he could have a bench warrant out for him, for nonpayment of a traffic ticket.

If we go with this theory, he could be anywhere. Although, IMO, the western U.S. would make the most sense.

So what's the next move? I can't believe that an article written by Steven in 2006 or 2007 or 2008 has anything to do with where he is now.

.....and THAT TIME, it says the article was "featured in the Deseret News". That's not a Deseret News-style piece of journalism. Maybe a paid ad intended to look like news. Definitely a press release type of thing.

I don't think the articles tell us what happened, or where he is now. I think that they show the job wasn't as dead end as I thought it was. Helps to understand him just a little bit more, without knowing him. moo

Starting at a small paper, then going to the Tribune is a good career trajectory for someone in journalism. He might have quit the Trib for ALL of those reasons, just an all-around bad life situation. The offer from Matchbin might have seemed like a step into the future, because online journalism or multimedia is supposed to be the wave of the future. What's weird is that Matchbin would convince him to quit the Trib, convince him to move, and then cut him loose in a month. If I were family, they would have some answering to do.

A month is barely enough time for a new employee to settle in to a new town. The idea that he should have been producing big numbers or something in a month is bizarre. I wonder if he felt he was conned and the job wasn't as represented. He quit a good job for it and it might have been devastating to get to St. George and find out it wasn't as advertised - and now he was washing windows.

Another thing that nags at me about his journalism career is that he is the second, fairly well connected young journalist to disappear or die in Utah in a brief period of time, the other being the UofU editor who was burned to death in a car. Were they working on anything freelance? Did their backgrounds make them suspect? Anyone googling Steven's name could find out that he USED to be a Trib journalist. Did someone get suspicious of him and disappear him?

OK, I'm officially confused. When did we learn that Matchbin wanted him to quit The Trib to go to work for them?

Steven quit the Tribune in July 2008, and didn't go to Matchbin until October.

There were three young people who died in car fires, within a relatively short length of time. Which one are you talking about? I thought all were ruled as suicides.

Is that why he was wandering around in a position to find the locked-out kids?

Were there any robberies in the Ruby Valley area later that week?

Car full of stuff parked in a cul de sac where somebody else can swing by and take the stuff, leaving empty car?

I don't know whether I believe any of this, but it's hard not to think the questions.

The burglary was in mid-August 2009; Steven had moved to St George in May. It'd definitely be a source of items to sell on eBay (and I did determine that Steven had an eBay account....although I don't have access to any of his activity and it would have aged off visibility by now.)

I'd be suspicious if the burglary had occurred before he moved to St George; it'd almost be a red flag.

Same here. It's not a hard leap.

We'd have to know the burglary reports for the areas he worked in...and we don't have any work information. It IS the kind of thing I'd have investigated, if I were LE and I had the time available. Certainly TH has the work logs.
I can't see him doing this by himself...but he could have been talked into helping. It'd be a worry, though, to the organizers, if they thought they had a tattler in their midst.

Something to remember, though: If you were burgled after having your windows washed, you'd likely mention it....and the trend would be pretty obvious.

bbm He was at Trib from March 07 to July 08 and started Matchbin in Oct 08 to July 09. I don't think they convinced him to quit. Also he was at Matchbin for 9 months. Enough time to prove what he could do.

Oh man - I just can't wrap my mind around this!

A month or so ago, I watched on TV that involved a murder I - think it was Foresic Files. It was some small town in the south or midwest, I think. Turns out, it was two brothers who had been burglerizing homes in the area and they wound up killing this guy. The older brother was a paraplegic - due to an accident - and was a heralded hero in the community! He did a lot of great things for the community - for which he was highly recognized. But all the time, he and his little brother were robbing everyone blind. NO ONE could believe it when he was caught, but there was so much evidence - journals, stolen property, etc. Even a plan for eventually murdering someone.

People are not always what or who they seem to be.
