In the afternoon hours of Friday, Sept. 18, police responded to an apartment on the 1200 block of Berrum Lane on the report of an unconscious boy. When officers arrived at the apartment, they found a boy dead in the corner of his bedroom. Authorities immediately determined the death was suspicious. The boy had been stabbed multiple times in the area of his arms, back and head. In addition to being stabbed, police say the room where the boy was found had clearly been set on fire.

The Washoe County Medical Examiner's Office conducted an autopsy on the boy which revealed 55 "sharp force trauma" caused injuries all over his body. The medical examiner's office determined the death a homicide by stabbing.

Police determined the 12-year-old boy lived at the apartment off Berrum Lane with his mother and a 42-year-old roommate named Edward Rivas, also known as Lalo. The boy's mom was introduced to Rivas in late spring or early summer and invited him to move in. Rivas and the boy's mother got in an argument a week prior which resulted in her locking herself in her bedroom and calling police. When police arrived, Rivas was not on scene. Documents reveal that the mother kicked Rivas out of her apartment before letting him back in a few days later.

Rivas, 41, was arrested by Reno Police on Sunday, Sept. 20 and booked into the Washoe County jail on open murder charges. He is scheduled to make his initial appearance on Sept. 28 in Reno Justice Court. Rivas is being held without bail.

A candlelight vigil is planned for Stevie Jamon on Friday, Sept. 25 at 6:30 p.m. outside their apartment at 1235 Berrum Lane in Reno.

Arrest made in the murder of a 12-year-old Swope Middle schooler

It was an employee at the Reno bus station who thought Edward Rivas looked like the suspect on a flyer about the murder of 12-year old Stevie Jamon.

The employee at the bus station called 911 as Rivas boarded the bus, and he was arrested Sunday.

Rivas, 42, was booked into Washoe County Jail and has been charged with open murder and arson. He is scheduled to be in court on Sept. 28.

RENO, Nev. (News 4 & Fox 11) — Newly obtained court documents reveal the moments that lead up to the murder of a 12-year-old boy inside a Reno apartment last week.

According to an affidavit filed in Reno Justice Court, the boy had been stabbed multiple times in the area of his arms, back and head. In addition to being stabbed, police say the room where the boy was found had clearly been set on fire, according to documents.

Robbery and homicide detectives with the Reno Police Department found some sort of plastic wrapped around the boy's neck and the carpet near his body burned to the subfloor. There was also visible smoke damage on the white walls nearby, according to the documents.

Documents say the mom provided police with her cell phone to access the exterior surveillance cameras inside the apartment. Detectives found two internet-based cameras inside the apartment. One pointed towards the back door and the other towards the front door. Rivas is seen several times on camera leaving through the rear door to smoke a cigarette on the patio. According to the documents, one camera loses connection shortly before 7 a.m. and does not reconnect.

Man accused of murdering 12-year-old Reno boy to be held without bail

RENO, Nev. (News 4 & Fox 11) — The man accused of brutally killing 12-year-old Stevie Jamon of Reno appeared in front of a judge for the first time on Monday afternoon.

A Reno judge ruled during a virtual hearing that Edward Rivas, 41, will continue to be held at the Washoe County jail without bail.

This poor boy -- I guess Rivas allegedly killed young Stevie because Stevie's mother was away, so he couldn't kill her. Or he did it because she would mourn and miss him for the rest of her days.
Another sweet child gone. Fly away in peace and happiness, young Stevie.
