NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. - For more than a decade, the family and friends of Theresa Insana have suffered through a terrible ordeal, filled with uncertainty, puzzlement and an endless stream of unanswered questions.

Insana, a promising 26-year-old sales manager from Niagara Falls, was found dead in Nov. 2004 in the Las Vegas area, where she'd moved to pursue her career. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department quickly launched a homicide investigation, but the case lingered under multiple detective teams before finally landing in the hands of the latest Cold Case investigators.
The case has received a great deal of publicity -- including a featured segment on Dateline NBC in 2011 -- but police have never been able to make an arrest.

Grace Carducci, Theresa's close childhood friend, said it's important to spread this image far and wide, all across the country and especially on the West Coast.

"There's someone out there in the world who will recognize this sketch," Carducci said. "And say, 'I know that person. I recognize that person.' All we need is that one person to see that sketch."

The body of 26 year old Theresa Insana was found in November 2004 in a drainage ditch at a construction site in Las Vegas. She had been working as a manager at the Rio Casino and Hotel after moving from Niagara Falls. Police found there were bloodstains in her home and on her car.

Her father Joe Insana said his daughter had a special way of connecting people and often tried to help them with their problems. But he says she had been depressed in 2004 following the break-up of her engagement to a casino co-worker. That was months before the murder.

Insana says he feels Las Vegas police detectives thoroughly investigated the case as they interviewed numerous people and even went through her diary for clues. Insana says they also collected DNA evidence but there were no arrests.

Joe Insana says police were also puzzled by the scene in her home. He says nothing was taken including jewelry and money. They also told him there were no signs of forced entry so she apparently knew her attacker and allowed that person into her home.

FOX5 talked to retired Senior Crime Scene Analyst, Yolanda McClary, who worked Insana's case for many years. She did the autopsy, and she said Insana fought back. The suspect's blood was found in Insana's home and on her clothes. The DNA never matched any suspect or anyone in the system, but now, new technology called DNA Phenotyping has made it possible to generate a picture of what this suspect would look like.

McClary said she remembers every detail in Theresa’s case.

“You had this incredible girl who moves here from New York after she graduates college with a best friend. She wants to come to Vegas she thinks it's exciting, She has a great life here, She was once engaged, and then all the sudden she's murdered,” McClary said, “The questions is just ‘why?’”

McClary said as the months went on and the DNA didn’t match, the case was eventually moved to the cold case division.

McClary started studying a new advancement called DNA Phenotyping. It can build a picture of what someone looks like, almost exactly, just based on DNA.

“Immediately I thought about Theresa Insana's case,” McClary said.
She says she brought the idea to Metro, and they agreed to use it in Theresa’s case. McClary says she’s very confident the image is spot on to the killer’s image. It shows a mostly southeast Asian man with dark hair and dark eyes.

McClary actually had one of these DNA images made of herself to test the accuracy. She says it was spot on in her coloring, face shape, all of her features, almost identical to her. The only thing she said the DNA can’t get a read on are fat cells. So the image produced will be that of an average sized person, but the suspect could be heavier or thinner.

Theresa and Jeff Fenton started dating in 2002. “She met him working at the Rio in the sales department,” Grace told Dateline. “Their relationship did move quickly.”

After just three months of dating, the couple got engaged. “She, you know, was so excited when Jeff and her got engaged,” Maribeth said. “And they came back to Niagara Falls. They were going to be married in Niagara Falls.” The wedding was planned for April 2004. “She was just really excited to take that next step in her life,” Maribeth remembered.

But the relationship didn’t last. The couple broke up in March, just weeks before the wedding. According to Maribeth, Jeff claimed he wasn’t ready to get married. “Theresa was so devastated,” she said. “Our hearts were just broken for her.”

Grace told Dateline the same thing. “She was so excited about planning her wedding, getting everything ready, and was so positive and excited about it. And then she was just completely let down,” she said. “My heart broke for — for Tree.”

In the months following the breakup, Theresa tried to pick up the pieces of her life and move on as best she could.

In May of 2004, Grace made her yearly visit to see her friend. During that visit, Theresa mentioned to her that something odd had been happening. “I had went out there to visit her for a long weekend and one of the days we were sitting in her house and she said, ‘Grace, there’s something weird that I feel that is going on here. Some days when I return from work, I turn on the television and it’s not on the same channel that I left it on when I left for work,’” Grace told Dateline. “She felt that somebody had been in her house when she was not there.”
