NV - Thousands stranded at Burning Man festival, rain and mud, roads closed, shelter in place, Black Rock Desert, 1 death, 2 Sept 2023

Recent post (about half an hour ago) from Burning Man Project's fb page is that they anticipate Exodus to begin around noon today, including Gate Road, it sounds like. No more rain forecast for the coming week.

I assume they will likely proceed with burning the Man tonight at 9pm and then the Temple at midnight, as posted sometime last night.

My first Burn, 2011. Out on deep Playa.

My last Burn, 2013, with two of my best friends. Heidi on the left, Celeste on the right. Our camp was Zebra Neighbors. We've been friends since our sports car racing days in the mid-80s to the mid- 90s.

ETA that's the French Quarter and the Cafe de Fin du Monde (Cafe at the end of the World) behind us.

Hoping they keep the live stream cam up and running for tonight's burns.

Nothing like mud with 7 ph alkali.
I always kept a plastic shoebox outside the RV entry to wash the dust off my feet and legs with vinegar. Shoes and boots stayed on the stairs. Inside I wore slippers or went barefoot only. The whole interior was covered in throw rugs and sheets that could be shaken outside every day.

Playa dust also rots fabric and metal. When I got home everything would get washed or wiped down with vinegar and water. I usually spent a day cleaning out the rental RV, wiping all surfaces down, sweeping out dust, trying to minimize how much dust went into the shop vac. The RV rental company tacked on a standard fee for cleaning the engine compartment and the undercarriage. I always got my whole cleaning deposit ($500-$1000) back for the interior. It was worth spending a day to clean.

I would take the whole week off from work after the Burn to give myself time to decompress and clean and store all my gear.

A little off topic but when I see so many cars in the desert, I can't help but think of the desert tortoises and their habitat. I love the tortoises.
No conflict there. (BLM, who manages the public land in the region, including the playa, would not issue a permit if it threatened any endangered species, IMO).

The playa is a dry lakebed, flat with no vegetation whatsoever.

The darker green is their habitat. The playa is the pale yellow swath inside the red circle I drew.

Heavy rains that poured down on 70,000 Burning Man attendees have also awoken hundreds of three-eyed 'dinosaur shrimp' from their slumber.

The small creatures, known as fairy shrimp, were encased in a thick shell for years until rainstorms drenched the Nevada festival, typically a dry wasteland, and provided an optimal environment to hatch.

The crustaceans were spotted emerging from the mud pits as revelers escaped the flooded desert and will start laying more eggs over the next week.

Fairy shrimp are known as 'living fossils' as similar forms date back to the Cambrian Period, more than 500 million years ago.

Thanks! I'm very familiar with the desert Tortoise having lived in the Mojave Desert for 63 years. ;)

You‘re adorable, La Louve! Actually, make that beautiful (inside too—Whitney’s Garden).

I posted something earlier that isn't correct. I mistook the "Chapel of Babel" for the Temple. Correct info as of now is: Chapel burns tonight at midnight, three hours after/into the Man Burn. Temple burns

I had it confused as well. So glad the burns will all be streamed.
