Couples: we already know about the Robinsons.

There's the Garcia family, mother, father, daughter, missing from Los Angeles, car found in the San Gabriel Mountains: http://www.doenetwork.org/cases/2900dfca.html She's a little too old and her coloring is wrong.

Carolyn Sue Martin disappeared in late 1981 with her 2-year-old son: http://www.doenetwork.org/cases/2895dfmi.html. Circumstances make it unlikely she made it to Nevada; sounds like BF killed her beside I-75.

Another one that I ran across that looked worth more investigation: Linda Rachel Pleva, missing since June 21, 1981 from Eugene, Lane County, Oregon: http://www.doenetwork.org/cases/1414dfor..

She was 31 when she went missing. 5'6"; 135 lbs. Brown hair and brown eyes, so that all fits. She also has Cesarean section scar on abdomen, hysterectomy scar. Sounds like two scars? The very high forehead was what caught my eye, and the low-set ears, but I'm not sure the jaw matches.

No cause she is European.

Hmmm what are the pollen tests they have and have performed to find out where uids have been?

You mean the UID? We know she has European dental work, which means she was in Europe at some point after her adult teeth came in. That doesn't mean she's European.

And we don't know whether any of the missing women who have been mentioned have a European connection. We don't know whether they might have grown up in Europe (immigrant, army wife, army brat, diplomatic/business child), lived in Europe (army, corporate, or diplomatic person or wife of same, teacher, exchange student), or visited there extensively.

I don't know whether they can do pollen tests at this date -- not unless they saved her clothing -- but the isotope tests would be useful. They'd have to exhume her, though, and I doubt if they have the budget for that. It would be great if they could!

All of her clothes are currently in storage in the washoe county sherrif's office.

Oooh, so it might be possible.

If I ever get rich, I'm going to set up a fund to pay for testing like this in UID cases...

I know, so many counties have a tremendeous back log going back years. When Brianna Denison was murdered the Nevada DNA resources were back logged I think it was with several years of samples they couldn't enter into their databases. They were able to update it once some local casino owners donated the money needed to get it all done.

I pollen test would be awesome, I saw it on In Search Of... and they were pollen testing the Shroud of Turin. Came up with some interesting findings.

Just left the library, I found a photograph from a September 82 issue of The Reno Gazette, featuring the Mt rose meadow. there is at least 7 inches of snow and the caption says as much as 2 feet of snow in some elevations!

This puts the whole bathing suit under her clothes into question as to why they would have gone swimming with that much snow near there.

Kymberly Scruggs went missing on January 12,1980. At least that is what Namus and Doe network states. Charley's project had the year as 1984. She went missing from Sacramento. I noticed it said she had a chipped front tooth.http://missingincalifornia.com/khymbrlyscruggs1980.html

Now recalling what the detective mentioned was that she was clean and had good hygiene. Did not appear to be homeless or a prostitute.

She looked like she was on vacation. As to her appearance, that's how she looked. I have a feeling the detective might be busy for a bit, dealing with the skull they just found.

Kymberly has a scar on her shin and the UID (apparently) didnt - I would assume they would have listed it in the UID's info if she had a scar there as they listed the scar on her stomach. The age really doesnt match up either, its expected that the UID is in her late 20's/early 30's, Kymberly would have been in her late teens/early 20's. The eye color looks off too, Kymberly has dark brown eyes and the UID hazel.

They do look quite alike though.

This puts the whole bathing suit under her clothes into question as to why they would have gone swimming with that much snow near there.

There was a lot of crazy weather there in 1982, mudslides and lots of snow.

Her clothes have been what bothers me from the start of this - typically you can put things together but so much about this just doesnt make sense.

Her clothes are completely wrong - a lace bathing suit, sleeveless T-shirt. and canvas tennis shoes with no socks? Its freezing, theres at least 7 inches of snow on the ground and it was the middle of the night - what reasons could there be that someone would willingly get out of the car and walk to where she ended up being killed?

Just the fact that she was so underclothed makes me doubtful that she would willingly walk to the spot where she was killed - no only would her clothes have not been warm at all but they would have become soaking wet as well.

1) If the purpose of the stop going to the bathroom one would assume they would go close to the car as possible in order to not be out in the cold long.

2) If the purpose of the stop was to have sex I would assume they would have sex in the car, not outside considering there was snow on the ground and it was freezing.

3) If the purpose of the stop was to kill her you would assume that at some point her footsteps would have become frantic, her attempting to get away from the person or attempting to break free, there would be some sort of struggle not just perfect footprints. Even if she thought she would go along with it there is always a certain point of which the person tries to get away.

Theres just something weird about walking around in a foot of snow in the middle of the night for no reason, even more strange to do so in clothes you would wear to the beach.

I keep trying to think of something that would bring them there and actually convince her to get out of a car and walk down the path - did she have a tox screen? I wonder if they went out to find a spot to be able to smoke pot or something, it would make sense you wouldnt want to do it in your car or even in that parking area because you could be scared that someone would smell/see it so youd find a close area? Can anyone else think of while she would have gone willingly?

My assumption is that her clothing was suitable from where she was from (somewhere warm) that she was on a vacation or some sort of road trip and that the person that killed her decided that would be a good place to do so, there are several highways around that he would have known made for a good get away. He had to have known that he could be hours away before anyone found her and he didnt seem to care about hiding her body which suggests either hes done something like this before or was convinced he didnt need to hide her.

Now the idea of vacation or some kind of trip is the belief of the sheriff department. They think she was on a trip and thus being why no one recognized her. That would also make sense if it was a road trip they would keep their stuff in the car or even be underdessed because "it's summer on the west coast of America".

Now from the LE stand point, the are sure she knew her killer. She could have very much went willingly out to the meadow that night. Then for whatever reason, things took a turn from there.

Yeah, It seems nearly certain that she was on some sort of road trip with the placement of several busy highways around as a perfect get away. With the clothes thing - Its possible the she dressed for the temp that they started the day off with, dressing for warm weather. Since it was late at night its possible they were driving most of the day. They could have also been moving - I wonder if she was a military wife/girlfriend? It just doesnt seem that anyone really was looking for her, she could have moved around a lot and all the friends she had from past places she lived just assume she didnt want to get in contact with them. She and her child (if she had one) could have gone missing and nobody would have thought anything of it.

The lack of struggle certainly makes it seem as though she knew the person, I can only assume it was her partner - whomever it was seems to have gotten away with it.

Someone has to miss her and its sad that her parents more than likely have since died and have no clue what happend to her.

That is most frustrating that there is a high possibility that her family (assuming she had no siblings) are dead. The only person who may know her identity is her killer. But until we locate her killer, we have nothing.

It must have been the final culmination of a serious domestic violence issue. Unless he woke up and just said "I'll kill my wife/gf/other."

  • #376
There's no reason to assume her family isn't alive and looking for her. If you go over to the "missing" forum, you'll find dozens of people who have been looking unsuccessfully for loved ones for 20 years or more.

Hey all - I've lurked, but never posted in this thread. I'm familiar with the Tahoe area, and this thread has struck a cord with me. I just wanted to offer some perspective from experience on the weather/clothing scenario.

While I agree it was a little chilly, it wasn't really "freezing." Okay - technically it might have been below freezing, but I bet the air temperature didn't feel near that cold. I did a little research on the temps of the day. Using dry/wet adiabatic lapse rates you can estimate temperatures at an elevation if you have observations from a nearby site. The closest weather obs station in 1982 was Truckee, CA, which is at 5900 feet. Using lapse rate equations, I estimated:

For July 16:
At the lake (~6200 feet): low 50-51 degrees, high 71-72 degrees
At the meadow (~8700 feet): low 37-44 degrees, high 58-65 degrees

For July 17:
At the lake (~6200 feet): low 42-43 degrees, high 78-79 degrees
At the meadow (~8700 feet): low 29-36 degrees, high 65-72 degrees

I checked the nearest SNOTEL (snow monitoring) site as well, and no new snow of any great depth had fallen since about May. The newest snowfall was a tenth of an inch on July 8. It was old snow. Old snow is crunchy. It won't really get you wet.

I bring this up because I've lived in the mountains all my life. In July, on 7 inches of old snow, on a clear night, when it's 40-ish degrees? That's mild, if you're used to it. I'd be comfortable in Teva sandals, jeans, and a long-sleeve tee. And though 72 degrees might be chilly for swimming at Lake Tahoe, it was nice and sunny on the 16th - I'd be out enjoying the day no problem in what our UID had on.

I lean towards the theory that she'd spent the day at the lake, was coming back, they stopped there to get out and stretch/go to the bathroom/fool around/do drugs or drink, and something went really, really wrong. I don't necessarily think it has to be premeditated because the killer had a gun on him/her. Maybe they were afraid of bears. :waitasec:

Did you have a sister, cousin or even a mother disappear in June or July of 1982? Was she a brunette with hazel eyes? 5'5" inches tall and weighed about 115 pounds. Was she born or raised in Europe during the late 50s to early 60s?

I am seeking anyone who knows of any woman with these traits that disappeared in mid 1982.

-Specifics-

- she had a 4-5 inch scar on her abdomen, possibly from a c-section.

- possibly born in or around Germany in the late 50s or early 60s.

- had been traveling with a man in the united states in 1982, or even married to an American man in the late 70s to early 80s and left a possible home in europe.

If you know of anyone who sounds like the described person above, please contact me immediately. I am looking to identify a Jane Doe that was found in Washoe County, Nevada in July of 1982. Right now I just want to give her name back. I am not seeking her killer. She has been gone 28 years now. Let's bring her home.

Does anyone here receive or have issues of the royal canadian mounted police gazette*from like 2002 and 2003?

This case was profiled in that publication during those years. I cannot locate back issues or those years on their website.
