Sorry, I've gotta give the opinion of the experts at the National Aviary more weight. I spent over an hour with them in person today.
Fair enough!

My people said it's definitely a hawk of the buteo genus if it's a hawk and not an owl. There are a handful of hawks in the buteo genus that qualify. I'm looking forward to your FL Game and Wild Life people to respond.
We need to keep in mind the people at the National Aviary said that certain species of birds are slightly different regionally. It would be idea if we could get bird experts from the West to respond. I really wish the Yosemite Arborists Society had responded. But the National Aviary are experts from all over the country, and they have the largest collection of birds in the country.
One of the artists I've identified is dead, but his son is an artist and I'm hanging hopes on his knowing his father's work and having access to it since his father established a gallery.
The Red Tails in your yard might still be relevant. They said the same types of birds vary by region. What state do you live? Maybe we can use that as a possible point to rule out your state as being where our victim was from.Fair enough!I'll keep my 20/20 view of them daily to myself then. :blowkiss:
I was able to date the drawing of this dead artist to the 80s via the books. I had seen the drawing on the internet, and then found it in the books yesterday. Let's hope his son has a good memory. He's old enough he wouldn't have been a child at the time.I have been leaning towards the hawk too for some time, but at any rate, no matter what kind of hawk, it narrows down the search for me anyway. And artist do "create" art, so the bird will not be exactly like a live bird all the time. We take liberties if you will. Hope you hear back from the son. I am emailing bird illustrators too, in the hope someone will recognize the design. later

The people at the National Aviary say we're looking at the underside. The tail feathers wouldn't cover up the wings if it was a view from the top side.
btw, that photoshop you did of the owl is great!
I went to bed last night with a MASSIVE headache. It was actually back of the neck pain unlike anything I'd every experienced. I felt as if I was going to vomit too. I feared I had meningitis or something. I took ibuprofen and couldn't even use a pillow because the pillow hurt it. These are soft down pillows too. I actually wondered for a moment if I should go the hospital. I probably would have if I hadn't felt like I couldn't drive safely. Fortunately, I was able to fall asleep because I was sooooooooooo exhausted and the pain was gone in the morning. Just hoping that's the last time I experience it. No idea what caused it so I'm happy to blame it on the BIRD! lolKentucky MM. I posted pics. I admire you guys! This has given me a massive headache.

God, that's beautiful. I saw that last night on the internet. Stunning. Owls are much better looking from the top, IMO. The reason it's not from the top is because the tail feathers cover the wings in our shirt picture. If our bird were from the top it would have to be a snowy owl. and a white background would make sense.

Not if it's an artists perception of the bird. That's what we are not going to be able to get past.
One thing that strikes me is the newspaper real estate section and the moving blanket/quilt with paint on it. Could this guy have been a painter? So many painters use the sprayers now because it is more expedient. What color was the paint on the blanket/quilt? Could it have been interior wall paint? Was it artists paint? Would love to see a pic of it as well as the shoes. Was there any paint on the clothing or shoes?
