The vintage t-shirt guy said it looks like a hawk and the orange circle would make sense as a sun for Native American. Then I stumbled upon these album covers while searching for bird art on album covers. They're both Native American music. Other ones show hawks flying in rays of sunlight. It seems Native Americans like to put birds in circles representing the sun. In Native American art with birds and the sun, the birds are almost always flying upwards, sometimes sideways/level, not swooping down.

Here is a picture of the hat.

View attachment 72653

The missing portion of the hat was done at the Forensic Laboratory. The hat read, prior to analysis, "Heavenly Lake Tahoe"

Random thought: I wonder if the victim was a trucker or hitched rides with a trucker. Maybe the shirt was one of those cheap shirts that were sold at truck stops. Three for $9.99. Those shirts had eagles, wolves and a lot of Native American themes on them. The hat, IMO, looks like something a trucker or tourist would buy at a truck stop.

I would LOVE to see photos of the shoes! Because nothing shows up with the brand name of them.

I think the orange circle could also be a moon. Kinda like this.. owl vintage effect.jpg

Mmarty, were there any traces of blood found on the blanket that was located at the makeshift campsite near where the victim was found? (If you're able to tell us.) Just curious if there's evidence he was wrapped in the blanket after being stabbed. Or, if not blood, was there any hair or other dna found that might link the victim to this blanket (before or after being stabbed)?

I thought the age range was 30 to 60, but the first page says 35 to 50. I don't know where I got 30 to 60 from. It seems others were searching based on 30 too. Hmmm....

Some really phenomenal work on the tee shirt today and I think we are getting much closer! I haven't seen TxJan today and am unsure if she has had the ability to work on her dropbox for a couple of days as there were 39 entries there when last I looked. There are 76 names on the list (post 268) and references to the post numbers and I have added the most recent one on my list to make 77 possibles so far. I will wait to post an updated list until we have a few more entries to add, but I think it's enough to keep the Detectives busy for a little while.

Concerning the eagle idea...the Native American Indian idea is intriguing, but the eagle has a white head and white tail feathers--so I'm thinking falcon and owl feathers more closely match the t-shirt. They are distinctly mottled and brown. The owl head is rather large, so it seems we'd maybe see a bit of it at least in the t-shirt scrap from the position of the wings. I'll have to take another look...

ETA: or maybe a hawk (also mentioned with the Native American Indian idea)

I received responses back from the vintage guy.

He really knows his stuff. He knows the area too because his business is in Oregon.

He'd like pictures of the hat and shoes because he may be able to date those.

I'm going to try to get him to join here and become a verified vintage clothing expert via contacting Tricia.

Finding a vintage clothing dealer was a great idea! I never thought of trying that.

Someone (sorry, can't remember which poster) asked about the whether or not the pants had been hemmed/altered/worn down. The pant legs appeared normal to me. They were not frayed at the bottom, which suggests they weren't too long for whoever wore them.

I've seen a number of questions asked about the car. Unfortunately that car has been the source of more frustration than answers. There just isn't enough to rule it in or out at this time. My partner and I are still considering what we can/can not release as far as the car goes.

A bunch of the ones I posted were in their mid-20's but we included age in the list and it's on the dropbox. I was thinking if LEO wants to skip through the younger ones first, at least there could be some on the list if we rule out all the others.

I even skipped over a few who were reported missing as infants, as the height age and hair color couldn't really be verified. If we come to that point when we have ruled out all other missing persons, we can start looking at those as yet another resource.

That's a possibility too. With a moon, it would be an owl. With a sun, it would be a hawk---or another perhaps.

I was thinking Hawk feathers also. That was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the stripes.

ETA: The more I look at it I'm changing my mind back to a Falcon

You guys are sure finding a lot of "near misses" with the shirt design. We knew it was a long shot at best when we posted the pic. The response to this thread has been amazing, even hard to keep up with at times! Thank you to everyone for your hard work with this!

Concerning the shoes, keep in mind they were found a half mile away. They may or may not have anything to do with the case. I can tell you from personal experience that although the body was found in a rather remote area, the road is somewhat well traveled. In fact, my partner and I revisited the scene not too long ago and in the span of about 45 minutes, we saw a vehicle on the road. In other words, it's not uncommon (unfortunately) to find trash in remote areas such as this. We are not opposed to posting pics of the shoes, but we are having lab work done first which will hopefully give us a better idea of whether or not they are connected to the victim.

Concerning the t-shirt on page 2 of this thread: the feathers resemble those of the peregrine falcon in the Big Bend Nat'l Park tee shirts. Wondering if Big Bend or another southwest national/state park had a tee with a peregrine falcon with setting sun behind it back in the early 1990's?

Tee photo from p.2:

(Sorry if this has already been discussed; haven't had time to read all the pages, yet.)

Quoting my earlier post to study the picture again...and I zoomed in to see something (I think?). Check the photo below and tell me if you think you see an eye and a downward bending beak at the arrows? If you don't, no problem...but I'm thinking I'm seeing a 3/4 angle view of a falcon-like face with its downward-hooked beak below the blue-gloved fingers here:

Or...maybe I've been studying too many bird tee shirts and my mind is drawing birds for me, now...

I really don't understand these families that don't know when they last saw a relative, especially when a parent doesn't know.

I'm not seeing it. That's just the darkness of the feather design playing tricks on you.

It might be a foot if it's a view from the underside of the bird. I've noticed some drawings include the legs and feet/claws and others make them blend in for a more pleasant aesthetic.

I think we've all been looking at too many birds. lol

I think the vehicle, the caller, and the UID male are all related. I believe the owner of the vehicle knows more than he is saying as well. The caller who would not identify himself (was the caller male?) obviously wanted the vehicle and the UID male found. Why would the caller care? I agree there are no coincidences in crime.

When my late husband was in the Army (drafted, Viet Nam), we lived at Ft. Riley, Kansas, for 2.5 years. We had friends from Oregon who had similar t-shirts. They were yellow background, orange moon, and an Indian looking toward the moon with feathers hanging from the hair. I have tried and tried to remember the writing on the shirts and cannot. I have lost touch with them or I would contact them. I can almost see those t-shirts!

I would love for this man to have his identity back and his family to give him a proper burial. I am reading with interest and see so many possibilities with the people submitted. Great work!

As my partner stated earlier, thank you all so very much for the hard work and effort you are all putting in to help us give this victim his identity back and hopefully get him back to his family. I wish we could brief all of you on every aspect of the case, but we can not. There are truly some amazingly talented minds at work with us here.

As far as the pic of the t-shirt goes, I am not seeing the eyes or the beak.

I'm curious, with what you all know of the case (which I know is limited and isn't as much as we may have), I'd like to hear some theories regarding the case.
