The child's mother told responding officers that their 6-month-old German Shepherd-pit bull mix jumped on the bed and attacked their infant daughter as she laid between her and the child's stepfather.

What in the world?
They’ve recently announced that the baby is now thought to have been deceased before the dog bite.

Autopsy reveals Queens infant did not die from dog bite as officials initially thought
Oh, how awful -- whichever way it happened.
A coroner or medical examiner would certainly see the difference fairly quickly during the autopsy, IMO.
Bring in the police/sheriff, whichever. Someone is is very big trouble, I would assume.
And that sweet young little one is just gone, gone, gone -- never to hurt again. Fly high, little one.
Takes my breath away.

I will be curious to learn the COD. IME and MOO - Dogs do not "attack" the dead.

I wonder if this is an instance of co-sleeping suffocation. The dog may have realized something was wrong with the baby and was trying to remove it from between the family members.

Six-week-old Kiyanna Winfield was in bed between her 26-year-old mother and her stepfather in their apartment in NYCHA’s Queensbridge North Houses in Long Island City when the couple woke up about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday and saw the puppy biting the baby’s face, cops were told.
Infant found dead in Queens apartment not killed by dog as first suspected

However, the New York City Office of the Medical Examiner said the dog bit off a “substantial portion” of her tiny face only after she had already died.

The baby, who was born on April 13, was pronounced dead at the scene.

RIH Sweet baby Kiyanna 😭

My heart goes out to this baby's parents and other relatives. It sounds like accidental suffocation, but the parents just didn't know about the risk.

(Infant should be in a separate crib next to the mom, without pillows and only with a "wearable" light baby blanket, not between the parents.). Again, I believe they just didn't know. Not sure why the dog reacted this way.
JMO.

One of the articles I read said she, her boyfriend, and the infant were living in a shelter. There may not have been a crib or basinet available in their quarters? Not sure but yes, a very very sad case.

The hyperlink in your post (#5) for the property, Queensbridge North Houses, is interesting.

Hmmm, I always wonder about those "dog killed the baby" stories...just saying.

same article has this so not sure if the adopted grandma is mistaken or she meant to say housing project or if the mother was in a shelter and then the project?

The adoptive mother of the child’s mom told The News on Tuesday she had offered to take the newborn in while the mom, who was living in a shelter at the time, worked to secure better housing.
