News 12 went to the Melrose apartment to talk to the child’s family, but a handwritten note was on the door saying the tenant “took weeks away for a while and will not be home.”

Thomas is not the girl’s father but has been dating Mitchell for four months, Mitchell said.


“She came back and found her daughter in a weird position not responsive and wrapped with covers,” Mitchell’s sister said. “She even called the cops from his phone. He was refusing to do it and kept her phone from her and kept trying to snatch the baby and kept saying she was OK and that she was asleep.”


“He has to pay for this,” she added.


Thomas was arraigned in Bronx Criminal Court on Saturday and ordered held without bail. He is due back in court Thursday.

Sometimes I think it's a tiny blessing when a child passes, free from pain and a possible lifetime of complications that may have arisen from that horrific abuse. And hopefully his charges will be upped to murder and they throw the book at him! The mother was only in the r'ship with him for 4 months, 16 short weeks and already she had introduced him to her precious child AND trusted him to care for Imani-Dior in her absence! I am in no way blaming mother, I just think a r'ship needs to be well established before introducing children into it.
