I had one years ago - I am sorry it scared the sh#t out me!! Used it once - the noise just felt like this is playing with fire!!

I agree!! The older ones are very scary. One blew up in my grandmother's house. Stuff stuck to the ceiling, the walls, shards of glass went everywhere, so that was enough for me to never want one. My s/o brought one when we merged our stuff, and has used it on occasion. When those occasions present themselves, I just avoid the kitchen area. They freak me out. Practically everyone around here owns one, I'd guess, but I avoid them like the plague.
