Bomb was UNDER dumpster.

"A short time later, a powerful explosion sent debris flying and shattered windows up and down the block. The bomb, filled with shrapnel and placed under a Dumpster on the busy crosstown thoroughfare, injured 29 people."

And a whole bunch of articles say it was in the dumpster.
"It also contained ball bearings and BBs to act as shrapnel, and was placed in the Dumpster inside a nylon bag with a zipper."

The weekend trail of terror continued along the Belt Parkway where federal agents nabbed several people of interest with a weapons stash inside an SUV.

The FBI took several individuals into custody on the Belt Parkway in the area underneath the Verrazano Bridge, with a possible connection to the bombing last night in Chelsea

Five individuals had been detained and questioned in Brooklyn near Verrazano Bridge on Sunday morning, but Sweeney said that they had been released without charge. He said their SUV had been stopped after they were seen leaving 'a location associated with Rahami' but none of them were under arrest.

Early news reports had indicated the car contained weapons and bomb-making equipment. These claims were not mentioned by Sweeney, who also said he 'would not discuss what (the people in the car) could face in the potential future.'

Also at 8.45pm, FBI agents in New York detained five New Jersey individuals on the Belt Parkway near the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in Brooklyn. Their car was initially reported to contain a weapons stash and bomb-making equipment. The people, who were from the same family, were taken to Federal Plaza in Manhattan for questioning. However, they were never arrested, and were later released without charge.

vs: the people fleeing in the SUV, the suspects family members, .............

I think if anything, it was a family in the neighborhood where the the bomb making factory was, a family unit - not his

In truth I think it was a lot of adrenline, impulsive thinking, wanting to be "doing" something! At the end of the day it was another error that lead nowhere, did nothing, and meant nothing. The speed at which they were released (i such a big case) was somewhat interesting - it was like not only were we off, we aint got NOTHIN here!

Hi!

That is what I am saying! Once it gets wrong it just rolls along wrong forever. In the old days (it is totally understandable that in the beginning stuff is flying all over (pardon pun) but correct it CNN!

We errounously reported earleir that the cooker was placed inside the dumpster, authoties have told us it was set down by dumpster before going off.

Looking through the news it appears the New York Times said "under the dumpster", other outlets said near the dumpster, but most said in the dumpster.

The Dumpster where the bomb exploded was being used in the renovation of the fifth and sixth floors of Selis Manor, a 205-unit Section 8 apartment building that provides affordable housing for the visually impaired and disabled.

The Dumpster sat on the eastern side of the building and that the bomb exploded with enough force to shatter windows, break a door frame and obliterate a security camera perched above the entrance. The camera recorded little more than a blinding flash.

Some 205,000 blind or visually impaired people live in New York City, and Selis Manor is the city’s only dedicated residence for blind people.

One of the immediate concerns was for the guide dogs – there are about 100 in the building.

IMO Our government needs to do a more thorough job of vetting spouses being brought over from countries known for terrorist activities. Not saying the wife is to blame.

Media again! They do not put any of these issues in a timeframe. All of this stuff with this family happened years and years ago. It was a different terrorist climate. The refugee stuff had not blown up yet.

In current time we know he ran around setting (trying) bombs off, Media back the tape up! At that time or around it , he was going to school, naturlized, mommy and daddy self employed , ISIS propagnda no where near as sophisticated etc. HINsight is

media does this after everyone, airtime. Media needs to be in their place at the time and see what the entire picture looked like back then

Going to ones homeland does not = terrorist. Of course we know things work differently now.

Just no red flags. We should learn from these things, instead of spending hours on air being shocked he also was on no watch list - the productive dialog on air would be what can do , from this day forward to have our watch lists do a better job

The expression about hindsight did not come out of anywhere -- know what I mean.

It just fills airtime, is non prducitve.

Yep, I guess I should not have been going 80 in a thunderstorm ...............................

pointless and helps noone IMO

Thanks for the map. (I'm mad at the DailyMail since they really messed up the Rita Maze case, but that map is what I've been wanting for this case.)

Like you maps/pictures help me a lot too!! Timelines as well ------------- order in the court!!

PS I am completly scattered in other domains!! Stories like we do here, need a start middle at least.

And if the damn media would clear up everything wrong in the beginning of the story it would help!!

The only reason I know they dont is casue of you guys! And that truly was how I learned this - it was in the beginning here, it was like holy sd$t - Anderson that is wrong. Brooke that is not correct. As time went on Ashley that is no accurate.

IMO Rachel and Carol Costello , these days are the only ones I have seen go back and correct!

When is the last time anyone has seen a correction in small lower right corner of a newpaper with a correction!!

Reports now say his wife AND his mother left the country recently:

"The wife and mother of bombing suspect Ahmad Khan Rahami left the U.S. just days before the coordinated attacks in Manhattan and New Jersey, a law enforcement official revealed....

His wife, whose name has not been revealed, was able to enter the country but left the U.S. just days before the terrorist attacks her husband is suspected of carrying out. His mother, Najiba Rahami, left the country for Turkey three weeks before the bombings and has yet to return, a U.S. official told ABC News."

still waiting for these two images on MSM:

The two men, caught on surveillance video footage, are considered potential witnesses, not suspects, in the bombing at 27th Street.

"They looked like they were two gentlemen just strolling up and down Seventh Avenue at the time. We have no information that would link them to this at all, however, we still want to talk to them, obviously."

The two men were seen picking up the bag containing the device, removing it and then leaving with the bag, for reasons that remains unclear. Police provided no specific description of the men who they said took the bag.

"Once they picked up the bag, they seemed incredulous they had actually picked this up off the street and they walked off with it. So we'll find out, we'll put their images out. Hopefully we can get them identified."

Rahami note found with unexploded device in Manhattan mentioned Fort Hood shootings, Boston Marathon bombings - NBC

A note found on the pressure cooker bomb left on 27th Street in Manhattan Saturday referenced Anwar al-Awlaki, the American-born al-Qaida-linked cleric killed in a U.S. drone strike in 2011, and the Boston Marathon bombings, a law enforcement official familiar with the investigation tells NBC News.

as "a hodge podge, a rambling, disconnected, choppy series of references to past events," ( with this description I get a picture of super drunk- maybe laying down where he did was more of a passout!) also mentioned the 2009 mass shooting at Fort Hood, where a U.S. Army major and psychiatrist killed 13 people and injured 30 others.

... but law enforcement officials wondered about the purpose of leaving a note with a bomb. If the bomb went off, the note would have been destroyed. Authorities are considering whether the intent may not have been for the pressure cooker device to explode, but for it to draw attention to the note.

more about the family/his mother:

Rahami, 28, was arrested in Elizabeth in February 2012 on a charge of contempt for allegedly violating a domestic violence restraining order, according to court records. The charge was eventually downgraded and heard in Family Court. It’s not clear what the final disposition was.

More recently, on Aug. 25, 2014, he was arrested in Elizabeth in connection with an alleged offense that happened three days earlier. He was charged with aggravated assault with attempt to cause bodily injury, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes. He was released on $25,000 bail. A Union County grand jury in January 2015 declined to indict him, records show.

At the time, his address was listed as Harbor Terrace in Perth Amboy, not in Elizabeth.

Another person at his last known address on Elmora Avenue in Elizabeth, Najiba Rahami, 51 [his mother], was arrested in 2010 on child abuse charges. Those were dismissed in 2011 after she completed a pre-trial intervention program.

(this explains how the cell phones were purchased in Perth Amboy, because he lived there).

Yes, prepaid phones are untraceable because there's no service contract*. And much cheaper than smart phones in any context - thus older (flip) models are used. The Boston bombers did a few test runs in an abandoned lot, and I'm sure others attempt this type of detonation and thus need cheap throwaway materials. If all that's required is a phone call (ie activating the phone that's left and connected) it doesn't matter what kind of phones are used in terms of smart vs. flip.

Smart phones probably have too much hidden location tracking etc that would make people nervous.

ETA: *untraceable until security footage from the store is reviewed. But so many drug dealers etc buy burner phones from little corner stores who are always SO surprised that their surveillance wasn't working..
Thank you for answering! I was thinking it had something to do with wiring! Haha

more info on the family:

The Elizabeth, New Jersey, home of Ahmad Khan Rahami’s family, located above their restaurant, First American Fried Chicken, are owned by Mohammad Rahami, Ahmad’s father, along with his mother, Najiba.

Along with his mother and father, Ahmad Rahami has several siblings, including three brothers and possibly two sisters. Two of his brothers share their fathers name, Mohammad, one of whom goes by his middle name, Qasim. The family had lived above the fried chicken shop since it opened in 2002. It is unclear when they arrived from Afghanistan and whether they arrived all at once or separately. The Rahami family is made up of Mohammad snr, 53, his wife, two adult sons, Ahmad and Mohammad Qasim, 25, apparently known as Qasim, and two adult daughters, Aziza, and Zobyedh.

Rahami’s sister, Zobyedh, a public health student at Rutgers, posted on Facebook, “I would like people to respect my family’s privacy and let us have our peace after this tragic time. I would not like to answer any questions.” She is a writer on the university newspaper, the Daily Targum, and had previously worked as an assistant at the Asian American Cultural Center at the university, and had posted anti-Donald Trump material on social media.

According to NBC News, five members of Ahmad Rahami’s family were stopped near the Verrazano Bridge in New York City late Sunday night and detained for questioning by the FBI. The New York Times reports that the suspects were mostly from the same family and “may” have been headed to JFK Airport. They were spotted at Rahami’s home, which was being watched by the FBI.

“The City Council voted to shut [the family's restaurant] down at 10. They kept getting complaints from neighbors; it was a distress to people in the neighborhood.” Neighbors said the Rahamis did not comply, and in one case, one of Ahmad’s brothers got into a fight with an officer who came to close down the restaurant. He fled to Afghanistan before the case was resolved.

Police removed evidence, including hard drives, from Rahami’s family home during the raid Monday morning. Two cars, a white sedan and a black Toyota Camry, were towed from the scene, It is not known if any members of Rahami’s family was at the home at the time of the raid.

more on the wife and mother:

The wife and mother of bombing suspect Ahmad Khan Rahami left the U.S. just days before the coordinated attacks in Manhattan and New Jersey.

Authorities are working with his wife’s home country of Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates in order to question the woman about what she might have known about the acts of terror.

Rahami had petitioned Rep. Albio Sires (D-NJ) to help bring his wife—who was pregnant at the time— to the country in 2014 after she ran into issues with her visa. “He wanted his wife to come from Pakistan. At the time she was pregnant and in Pakistan. They told her that she coud not come over until she had the baby, because she had to get a visa for the baby.” Sires said that Rahami was "kind of nasty" when he called his office from Islamabad, Pakistan asking for help.

Rahami, an Afghan-born naturalized U.S. citizen since 2011, married his wife in Pakistan and had made at least three months-long trips to both Pakistan and Afghanistan since 2014.

His wife, whose name has not been revealed, was able to enter the country but left the U.S. just days before the terrorist attacks her husband is suspected of carrying out. His mother, Najiba Rahami, left the country for Turkey three weeks before the bombings and has yet to return.

One expert MSNBC said he thinks he tried to use the cell phones alarm feature to ignite?

But now with the recent revelation that there WAs a note, I think we might have to conclude that the second was not rigged to go off or was rigged to do so in like 4 hours so his note could be found.

Althoug inept, I cant imagine someone thinking a note could be read after being on top of a bomb!

some interviews with neighbors:

She said that during a visit to the shop in the last few weeks, she had seen two new men behind the counter who she had never seen before and that Ahmad Rahami was cooking food in the back of the store.

A young teenage boy who often worked in the store served her. She said the other men who were behind the counter spoke to Ahmad Rahami in a language the young boy didn't understand.

Another neighbor said: 'The last time I saw him was on Friday, in a blue car. He parked in front of my house in the blue car. 'He always parks in front of my house. I saw him in the shop not long ago. 'I see him maybe two times a week in the shop, but I always see him in that blue car.'
