“Joseph Calabrese was a dedicated detective, union official, husband and father. He was the salt of the earth.”

"At around 3 a.m., Calabrese’s black Cadillac sedan was found by another detective near Plumb Beach just off the Belt Parkway and about five minutes from his home, sources said.

The NYPD launched a massive manhunt for the missing cop, with at least 100 uniformed and plainclothes officers scouring the area near Sheepshead Bay, where Calabrese’s car was parked — making the grim discovery in the afternoon.

“They were looking by the water . . . Then they saw the body up by a tree,” a source said. “He shot himself.”

Two men could be seen collapsing in the arms of detectives on the beach."

"Calabrese’s death comes just a day after Steven Silks, the deputy chief of Queens North, fatally shot himself in the head in an unmarked patrol car.

Silks, 62, had been weeks away from his scheduled mandatory retirement.

Hours before Calabrese’s body was found, NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill honored Silks and urged fellow cops who were struggling to seek help.

“Steve truly was one of the most capable and most dependable cops this job has ever seen,” O’Neill said at a safety briefing.

“The cops here today, I need you to know help is available to you. Help is here. You are never alone.”

Thanks for the post. Two of New York's finest are gone. Oh, dear. Prayers for their families and for their fellow officers. How very sad.

I'm sorry but my first thought is that something was about to come out very soon that would incriminate the two detectives and they took the easy way out for them.

How awful for them and their families, and most certainly for their brothers in blue. May God comfort them all.

But that's probably not the case. It's more likely that they had emotional PTSD from accumulated traumatic incidents, piled on over the years.

The LE suicide rate is very high, and not because of 'incriminating evidence' ---but because of the long hours, stress, family breakdowns etc, that build up over the years.

Can you imagine some of the horrible things they have seen during their careers -- rapes; brutality against gays, blacks, "foreigners" (those who don't look like "us"); babies and little children in all kinds of awful situations; addicts; old people with no where to go; 15 y/olds being pimped; etc., etc. It takes a toll, I'm sure. Certainly they each had amazing and wonderful victories and good endings, too.
They were near or at retirement age, so it could have been that they thought their future lives would be useless, etc. Going from 80 mph in their daily lives to a 20 mph pace.
It may happen more than we know. Just so sad.

You never know what demons people face inside. That the one officer was just weeks away from mandatory retirement could have something to do with his death. I have known a few people in my life that took their own lives and I never ever saw it coming. I feel so very sorry for their families.
