I don't follow Twitter until someone here posts a specific link, so thank you.

So good to see Avonte's brother working hard to get the word out and find Avonte.

I'm glad to see a 24 hour tent set up at the school. Avonte's clothing description should stay constant as long as he doesn't pick up a jacket and cover up his striped shirt. He must be so tired and dirty by now. Tomorrow will be a week.

Sorry to be so graphic and personal but...I wonder about Avonte's toilet habits. If he is soiling himself he would surely draw a lot of attention on the trains.

I was just thinking the same thing.

He's been gone far too long. This is so strange. As a result, I'm going to execute some tactics to further the search efforts via the Internet. These techniques are entirely unconventional, but extremely effective. As far as policy goes, I won't disclose the nature of these methods. Let's see what we can do! Wish me luck on this!

Not sure whether this means anything, but the gofundme page has been taken down

I know. I wanted to read the rest of his brother's tweet, "At this ti..."
and when I clicked on it, it was gone.

Thanks for answering my question. Yes, I wonder how street savvy he is. Once on his own even mom might be surprised of how far he could stray away. As long as he wasn't attracted to the river.

Just jumping off your post...

I am new to the thread... So am behind y'all...

But I am working on catching up...

I hope he is more attracted to the trains/subways than he is to the water...

:please:

One of the links I read earlier said he had the mental ability of a 7yr old.. so keep that in mind, as well as being non verbal.

Praying he is found and SOON!!!

And I can't believe how fast he was on that video. Sprinting along like it was nothing!! BUT, I did notice he didn't stop before crossing that street. So no fear, or awareness of safety. Very concerning.

Random thought...

Is there a location in the area where his class was taken for a field trip?

and he found very interesting?

Interesting enough to want to revisit?

Zoo?..Museum?..Aquarium?...???

:dunno:

IMO his brother's shortened tweet indicates that they have received enough money for searchers costs (gas, bus and train tickets etc) so he took down the gofundme. They had close to $5000 at last count.

There was an aide at the school assigned to a group of six students, which the boy was part of, according to NYC DOE Chancellor Denis Walcott.

Was hoping to see 'Found Safe' when I got home from work today

It's time for Avonte to go back home to his loving family!!! Where on earth is he???? It's been six days too long

  • #113
Maybe. If you follow him on Twitter could you read the rest of the Tweet from 3 hours ago? (9m Eastern)

I'm following him and still can only see a shortened tweet. ??

The school likely knew he was a bolter; that would be discussed in his IEP and explains why he was supposed to be 1-on-1. When I worked with MRDD populations, we called students/clients bolters when they had a habit of running. Someone who is mentally challenged but physically fit can be very quick. And it's not likely the school had enough staff for 1-on-1 supervision, but I'm sure they did their best with the staff available. They would need to turn their attention away for just one second, and a bolter could be long gone.

<RSBM>

I really hope Avonte has found shelter and that someone is looking out for him.

Yup!

That's what happened with the severely autistic daughter of one of my dear friends. She's the one who now has the special GPS device thing on her belt at all times that I posted about earlier.

She tried getting away from her 1-1 aide in Kindergarten and nearly got away with it, and a few weeks later made a run for it from her SS class (where she also had a 1-1 aide, though not one with much experience with that sort of thing) and they got their little gadget thing.

Like I said in my earlier post, it's the neatest thing because if something happens and you're looking for your child, aside from the GPS, it allows those with access to remotely to also cause it to turn on so they can hear the surroundings/voices/etc. around their child. That can be valuable information in addition to the location to know if they were with some, taken (and if you recognized a voice or heard someone threatening them, etc.) by someone, crying, etc.

I've told all my friends with kids who have even made slight attempts to bolt or gave indications they may be runners to look into it.

And after the rash of autistic kids gone missing on WS the last few weeks, only one of which I think was recovered alive (the rest were all near water and found in water) I've been re-reminded of how much of a life/death resource that could end up being.

Praying Avonte's just having himself a grand adventure and unaware of how many who are looking for him...but that those looking will find him soon!

I'm so glad the GoFundMePage was only taken down because they raised the money needed. It worried me to see that!

The desperate search for Avonte Oquendo continues, as the reward was increased to $10,000 for information leading to his safe return.
http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?section=news/local/new_york&id=9276035

Psychics are assisting the NYPD in a desperate search for an autistic boy who has been missing for a week as his family prepares to sue the city.

But “several” psychics called the Crime Stoppers tip line regarding Avonte, the source said. One suggested police search a tunnel near Tompkins Square Park in the East Village.
Cops looked there but came away empty-handed.

His brother tweeted about searching Tompkins Square on Thurs due to a good lead. I had thought a person may have seen Avonte but it sounds like a tip from a psychic.

(I know his brother is not msm but he seems to be putting out the latest info.) New tweet:

The vigil for Avonte will be held at The Riverview School tomorrow at 5pm

I am afraid that someone untrustworthy might have befriended him in order to take advantage if his vulnerability. Criminals use kids to deliver drugs, get more government handouts, or sell them as sex slaves. He could even be tricked in to stealing things for some druggie to sell.
