I checked, it was an English translation. But even in German speaking countries, Rilke is something only read in the equivalent to college and only by highly educated people for fun.
It is quite dark poetry and essays, nothing you would take with you to a fun camping trip.
There are plenty of people who find Rilke's poetry beautiful. I think that the fact that he had an English translation suggests that he was not a native German speaker. I agree that it is likely that a fan would probably be at least a college graduate. MOO.

Bumping case up. Susikatze, that comment was a little bit funny (made me laugh).

Agree. If you were fluent in German you'd be unlikely to read an English version since so much is lost in translation.

Re the book itself: I read it not long ago, the original post gives a good summary. It could be described as a novel, but it's a series of fragmented musings and there isn't exactly a narrative. The 'notebooks' are poetic entries on various things - memories of family/childhood, books and historical figures, love, travel, sickness. But most notably and commonly, death. I'm only speculating, but it makes me think that this Doe went there to commit suicide.

Updated NY State Troopers link: Unidentified: Town of Stony Point, Bear Mountain State Park, Rockland County, NY

A week from today, this Doe will be 34 years unidentified.
