I wonder why WaPo categorizes its article on Epstein’s death under “National Security” and has not opened it for comments. The comments are often more informative than the article. Maybe that’s why.

The WaPo routinely does this when they feel the commenting section will get out of hand. They do this for tragic deaths too. (Although Epstein's death isn't tragic)

Representatives for those who allege Epstein abused them and others who have followed the case said his death was not the justice they had sought.

“The fact that Jeffrey Epstein was able to commit the selfish act of taking his own life as his world of abuse, exploitation, and corruption unraveled is both unfortunate and predictable,” said Brad Edwards, a lawyer for some alleged victims.

Sigrid McCawley, another lawyer for victims, said the timing was “no coincidence,” and she was hopeful the government could continue to investigate “those who participated and facilitated Epstein’s horrifying sex trafficking scheme that damaged so many.”

“The reckoning of accountability begun by the voices of brave and truthful victims should not end with Jeffrey Epstein’s cowardly and shameful suicide,” McCawley said.

Attorney Lisa Bloom, who she represents two alleged victims, said on MSNBC she now plans to file a civil lawsuit against Epstein’s estate in an effort to collect money for her clients. She called on the executors of his estate to freeze Epstein’s assets and not begin to distribute them to his beneficiaries.

Thanks. I’ve never seen this happen before. The comments frequently get out of hand. I still don’t understand why the article is posted under “National Security.” Oh well...

Well, granted, but... there are two actors in this situation, if the situation is a murderous frame job. Frankly, the fact that it was already made public knowledge that he tried to commit suicide once before, argues in favor of him finally succeeding; more than it does that he survived one murder attempt but failed to evade a second. I should think if someone tried to kill you once you'd be on high alert; and your lawyer would also be complaining/shouting from the rooftops that your client wasn't safe, and demanding better monitoring; and I don't recall hearing JE's attorney making a peep (happy to be corrected if wrong).

It's obvious he should have been on suicide watch with hindsight but the assessments conducted over the last few weeks must have led to this ceasing. Many a person has convinced a decision maker to relinquish a suicide watch, either in prison or the hospital system, even when they were still suicidal. The challenge in these situations is suicide watch requires some removal of rights, to a greater extent than what would normally be in place for those imprisoned. So there has to be very clear justification for the suicide watch to remain in place. That's why so many mental health patients held involuntarily are released back into the community too soon.
